Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Yusen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
The art of navigating the job market right now can feel overwhelming. Looking for your next role or preparing for an interview is a full time job in itself. I try to differ my services by working 1:1 with clients to really understand more about their individuality. It’s important to narrow that down in order to be able to craft a narrative they can speak to in an interview in a way that makes them feel confident, and therefore stand out. The end goal is my clients walk away from working with me feeling empowered and excited to talk about their experience and why they are the best candidate for a role. I try hard to stay away from the corporate feel of a “click here and create a resume” experience because in my experience, it is more important to craft a narrative and package that feels true and authentic to their character and skills. With that package in their toolkit, they are able to more easily navigate where they want to go next in their careers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Over the last 8.5 years, I worked in sales advertising at Twitter, working with Entertainment clients like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. When I decided to leave the company, I realized the landscape of the job market has drastically changed as companies figure out the new “normal” post covid. The changes are not just in how we get jobs but in how we prepare, how we interview, and how we stand out. In addition to this, the competition is at an all-time high due to layoffs across industries. I decided to start Picturesque Co. to help people feel more confident in talking about their skills and experience in an authentic way that increases their chances of being seen as a top candidate when applying for a role. In this market, a lot more is required than just a plain resume when you want to land a job. That’s where I come in. I help with resume design, interview preparation, cover letters, networking (think LinkedIn refresh), and overall “personal brand packaging.”
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In true form of practicing what you (or I) preach…. the key is to always invest in your network because so much comes from who you know. Utilizing the people around me has been an invaluable tool for learning about what kind of people were needing my help and therefore growing my clientele.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea that a resume is a one size fits all. I was taught that your resume should list your experience and could then be sent off with any job application. In fact it is the exact opposite. A resume should be tailored to every role that a candidate is applying for – making sure your resume highlights relevant skills and aligns well to the job description in order to be a more desirable candidate.
