Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
Although, I’ve been working in the beauty industry for a decade, my business (and my life) really started over after moving to Los Angeles in 2017. I started my business small, working on my own to offer hair and makeup services for television, film, brand shoots, and to brides on their wedding day. As the years went on, I started to receive more bookings and referrals. I shifted and leaned into what was organically growing the most – my bridal business (Emily Lynn & Co.). I grew my team artist by artist, however, so much changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
With weddings being cancelled or postponed, everyone in the wedding and event industry was at risk of collapsing. As the pandemic wore on, and once we were able to educate ourselves on how exactly to work in the safest way possible, we began working with couples planning micro weddings and elopements. This allowed for marriages and virtual celebrations and this small and intimate concept took off as a full fledged wedding trend. The special moments that I got to witness re-ignited my love and passion for what I do and I loved watching couples choose to move forward with their small weddings was such a joy!
We kept expanding our team during the 2021 and 2022 “wedding boom”, and it was so exciting to see the entire industry thrive. Today, we have a team of nearly 30 hair and makeup artists freelancing under the Emily Lynn & Co. brand. My team worked 500+ weddings, events, shoots, and production jobs in 2022 – definitely our biggest year yet and I could not be more grateful!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a professional hair stylist and makeup artist, and the founder of Emily Lynn & Co. Our brand provides on-site hair and makeup services for weddings, events, photoshoots, and production all over Southern California. Our niche is natural and effortless looks that make our clients feel like themselves and the best version of themselves!
That sentiment – “wanting to still look like yourself on your wedding day” – has really resonated with people. Our clients want to feel confident and not feel covered. I’m all about enhancing natural beauty and my heart is to empower and build confidence for every one of my clients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We are all about helping you feel like the best version of you! Yes, hair and makeup is our medium, but it’s more than that for me. 95% of our clients tell us about a bad experience they’ve had in the past where they got their hair and makeup done and they felt like they looked like a different person. Our branding, messaging, and reputation in the market would be that we want to help you feel confident and like a polished, really amazing version of yourself!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Working on my website SEO was the single best thing I did to grow sales within my business, in terms of advertising! After being on the first page of our target Google search results, we’ve been able to generate leads and reach more potential leads, and all without spending a dollar.
We also have a network of incredible vendor-friends who kindly refer their clients and we could not be more grateful for their trust! I love the wedding vendor community so much and it’s amazing to be able to build working relationships and collaborate to create and execute beautiful events together.
