We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Wilcox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Making sure my portfolio is inclusive is a top priority. Making sure everyone can see themselves in my work is so important to me as a portrait photographer.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It’s always hard to say when you got “started” in photography… I’ve basically had a camera in my hands my whole life. After high school, I attended Kutztown University for my BFA in photography. Like most college grads, I moved back in with my parents after college. Word must have gotten around that I had a BFA in photography because I’ve been shooting weddings, families, and boudoir ever since!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Community has been hands-down my most valuable resource. I only wish I had found it sooner! When I started in this industry I was mislead to believe it was cutthroat and that I needed to be an island. After a few years in the industry I started attending a few networking events I realized this just isn’t true. Whether it’s in person or online a good community is invaluable!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of the things I hear a lot from customers is how inclusive my portfolio is. I always feel I can continually improve on that, but it makes me proud to hear that that’s obvious to my clients. Inclusion has always been important to me and my business from the very beginning. Making sure people feel comfortable and seen in front of my camera is my number one priority.
