We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Ulrich. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Something that we love to do is give back to the Houston community. Animal homelessness is at an all time high in our area and a lot of dogs and cats are in need of a home. With this, shelters and foster groups continue to take in animals with little funding and volunteers. With my dog Instagram, I am able to help by showing animals in need and collecting donations for various shelters and groups. I do this by posting a picture of one of our rescue dogs (or a dog in need) and educate the public on ways to help. (Donate, rescue, foster, volunteer, etc.) I also collect items that will help fosters or shelters provide for these animals in need such as blankets, food and toys. I have a passion for this and I hope one day we will have Animal Welfare reform in Houston.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In college, I volunteered every weekend for BARC Animal Shelter. There, I found my four rescue dogs and continued to spread through my personal social media sites. I decided to separate my personal social media and my message, so I created the Instagram @houstondoggopics. A lot of my first photos were of animals that were looking for their “forever home”. Over time, I used this page to post our rescue pets to keep a consistent message (that is: adopting is such a rewarding experience!). Now, I focus on collecting donations and promoting local rescue and foster organizations.
Something I’m proud of is how I’ve built the page to surround animal rescue. I love that I can promote local foster organizations such as RPM, Special Pals, Friends for Life and others to the public. I love to hear others rescue stories and to see animals find their forever home. One day, hopefully we will have the ability to find every animal a home.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I work a lot with small businesses in promoting their products. I have had the opportunity to partner with some amazing pet brands that have the same passion I do – helping animals. Collaborating with these groups has definitely widened my audience and helped me build my social media page to what it is today.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The animal rescue groups in Houston are very tight knit. We all have such a passion in helping out animals that don’t have the opportunity to help themselves. I meet new people every day who are new to the rescue world, but I also know people who have made it their life’s work. It takes a village.
