We recently connected with Emily Turner and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I was rebranding last fall, I had a long list of names that I was considering. As I narrowed it down, there was one thing I was focused on. I wanted the name to be more than just a name. I wanted it to be a feeling. I wanted the name of my business to evoke emotion every time you say it. I wanted it to paint a clear picture of what you will feel like as you walk in and out of my space. I am particularly proud of the name because I truly think Golden Hour does just that.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Golden Hour Denver is a spray tan studio located in the Lower Highlands. Our goal is always to bring your inner glow to the surface. We believe that our brand is about way more than just an airbrush tan. We take serious pride in what we do and it starts from the moment you walk through our doors. Nervous about stripping down in front of a stranger? We’ll make you forget you’re even naked. Having a bad day? We’re here to listen as you vent about it. We promise to take care of you, make you laugh a bit, and provide you with the best tan in town.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I always joke that I have no idea how to manage a team, because it has been new to me entirely within the past year as we have grown. Throughout this learning period for me, my number one focus has been to manage my team in the way I would want to be managed- with the freedom and trust to see the brand & company vision and apply it as they see fit. We are all different, but that’s exactly what makes my team so special. At our core, we are passionate and we love what we do. We love Golden Hour, and we get to do it as our own people. The core values of this brand radiates through each of my employees and they get to bring that to light in their own way.
I have been very honest with my team about what my expectations are and have provided them feedback when necessary. I think this allows them to do the same for me as a boss/coworker/business owner who is constantly learning as well. I’ve been incredibly intentional about curating a positive environment for my team. where we are not competitive, but rather we are wildly supportive of one another, whether it is at Golden Hour or with everything we are doing outside of it.
This part of being a business owner has been more rewarding than I ever thought it would be. My team wants all the best things for Golden Hour just like I do and it blows my mind every day. I get to share my passion for my company and this industry with some of my favorite people in Denver and that is the most special feeling!
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
One of my favorite things about this brand and business is that it’s about so much more than a spray tan. I know when my clients are going through a transition at work, if they got a new dog, and simple things like how their day is going or if their in-laws are in town. I hear about when they’re having a hard time with their significant other, or when they’re going on a trip they’ve been dreaming about for years.
I stay connected with my clients through social media (I am always good for a like & a comment hyping you up) but also during their appointments. I so often hear that they walked in my doors in a bad mood, but that they walked out feeling lighter, more confident, and overall better than when they walked in. That feeling is everything I’ve always wanted this place to be, and that is going to have a higher retention rate than any promotion I offer or social media post we make. If you come visit the girls at Golden Hour, I promise you will want to stick around.
