We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Tobias a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful is defined in a plethora of different things. For me personally, being successful meeting personal goals and eliminating comparison. Comparison is ultimately the thief of creativity and if we set goals that are based off of other creative journey, we are complying with the path that we are on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the realm of digital art starting my freshman year of high school when I took yearbook. I slowly developed a love for visual art and then eventually became the Design Editor for the yearbook staff my senior year of high school. From there, I found a love for the process of creating and the endless possibilities of communicating ideas and thoughts that we cannot physically hold. As of right now, I am the graphic designer for an ethical and sustainable clothing brand that seeks to lessen their carbon footprint in the world. I do social media graphics, advertising, packaging and print design for the company. My individual core concentration within graphic art is to connect with my audience through visually representing certain feeling, emotions and ideas that we don’t deem tangible. I find value in gaining perspective through visual art and I strive to do the same with my audience.
Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest shifts in my creative career was peak covid. I had just been sent home from my college and I was living at home with my parents in the midst of the busiest set of classes I have taken up to this point. Since I was stuck at home, there was a sense of loneliness that came with that. There was no grand decision or moment that was a turning point necessarily but I started pouring myself into learning technical abilities for my medium of art that I had not had the chance to absorb yet. It was invigorating and thrilling. I felt to accomplished knowing that the skills I was learning would totally change the trajectory of what it meant to be a graphic artist.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to be able to take my technical and emotional skills that go into my craft and help a company or person say what they want to say through design.
