Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Shipp. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a military spouse, I’m in good company as an entrepreneur- 48% of military spouses are self-employed, business owners, or aspire to be! I’ve seen the struggles that small business owners face while trying to fulfill every role in their growing companies.
That’s why I started Social Graces. I love to help service providers (think real estate, finance, coaching etc.) take a few tasks off their plate. A social media presence and strong graphic identity are almost required to give a business credibility in 2022, and I specialize in helping small businesses present a consistent, engaging public face online.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Emily! I’m the owner of Social Graces LLC, a social media agency specializing in service-based business. I was a product and graphic designer for over a decade when I started Social Graces. A friend asked for my help creating social media content for her business, and the rest is history!
I ended up falling in love with social media and what it can do for small business. A business’s social media accounts can create a community, provide social proof, and create legitimacy- all while increasing their accessibility to their audience.
I love to tackle complicated subjects- finance, real estate, even biotech- and create content that engages and educates a business’s audience. My lay understanding of these topics is a strength because it helps me identify the content topics that the average follower will respond to, and I get to learn something along the way!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I get the majority of my new business connections through referrals. If you’re starting out and still building your client list, don’t be afraid to let your clients know that you have availability for more work. Networking is the simplest and most successful way to build a service-based business.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I started Social Graces in summer of 2019: my son was old enough for a few hours of preschool per week, and I had that time available to work! Then in March of 2020, he went on Spring Break and school never went back in session. Add in a cross country move that fall, and I ended up running the business while being a full-time stay-at-home mom for a year and a half.
Naps became my work hours, and time management became my paramount skill. Even still, I am meticulously organized with my calendars and posting schedule. It was a struggle to continue working and growing my business during that time, but the silver lining is the highly efficient workflow I’ve perfected.
