We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Sanchez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
From a young entrepreneur’s perspective, there are several key changes I would propose to the education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career by fostering creativity, adaptability, and entrepreneurship skills, which are essential in today’s rapidly evolving world.
I believe it’s important to Introduce entrepreneurship education at an early age. Encourage students to explore their passions, develop problem-solving skills, and create their own projects or businesses. This hands-on experience will teach them valuable skills such as critical thinking, decision-making, and risk assessment.
Also, shifting the focus from memorization to fostering creativity and innovation. Encourage students to think outside the box, experiment with ideas, and pursue projects that interest them. Incorporate design thinking and problem-solving challenges into the curriculum and connect students with real-world experiences.
Most importantly, include comprehensive financial literacy courses in the curriculum. Teach students about budgeting, investing, saving, and the basics of personal finance. This knowledge will empower them to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I’m asked what I do for a living, I always stumble on the question. I feel as though I wear multiple hats as an entrepreneur, but my answer is always: I am a business owner (e-commerce) and a content creator. What I think sets me apart from others is that I never thought I would be a business owner. In a way it just happened when I started sharing my hobby for home decor and plant care on Instagram back in 2018, and once I allowed myself to be creative, it is when my full potential began to show. Sharing my hobby on Instagram led me to the world of content creation which I had no idea existed. From there it led me to working on my first product since I had dipped my toes a little in brand development and realized I loved it.
I am very grateful and fortunate that my small business has been a success so far on not only my online shop but also on Amazon, and retailers all over the US, Canada, and Europe. But thats only half of it. Content creation is a full time business of itself, and I pride myself in also creating a personal brand that is well received by likeminded people. It definitely has not been easy, but with he support of my family and friends, they help me get through tough times or if I am ever doubting myself. I have learned many lessons along the way but what I constantly tell myself is that if I have made it through some very tough times in my life, then with whatever hurtle comes my way next, I will always be a little more stronger.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I first started my social media as a hobby to share my love for plants and home decor with others. From sharing and having the opportunity to connect with great people really motivated me to turn my hobby into not only a business but a personal brand. My advice would be to have fun with social media, and really value the friendships, connections, and opportunities you can make from it.
Also, remember that the platform is not only for your audience, but also for you and your memories, so use it as a form of expression and share what you want. There may be times you think something is “out of your niche” but this give people the chance to know you a bit better and expand you audience.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I took the route of manufacturing private labeled products for most of my plant care tools. Already being familiar with Alibaba.com from purchasing shipping products, I quickly learned that I can find an independent designer, find the right manufacturer after evaluating different product quality, and have it result to my perfect product. Since 2020 I have launched 7 different private labeled products overswas, and also launched apparel for my brand by working with AKA, a local printing business here in San Diego.
