We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Randolph. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Creating artwork is all about building blocks, building skills. There is no fast track. Everyone learns at their own pace. I started with photography, which honed my eye. It taught me composition. It taught me about the necessity of contrast. It taught me about lighting. These skills and many more were very important building blocks for me for when I picked up a paint brush years later.
There are infinite aspects of creating artwork, and each is a study in itself. This is why artists are never finished learning. There is always something new to explore. This can be an overwhelming thought, but in reality, it’s what keeps us artists motivated and growing.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a mixed-media artist and love to experiment with new materials. Each time I use a new material, it’s like embarking on a new adventure. One never knows where it might lead! Adopting new materials or a new way of doing things helps me grow and keeps my work fresh.
One group of projects I am particularly proud of are my photographic sculptures. Inspired by commercial works and signage, I created layers of photography, printed on dining or under plexiglass, making them 3D. I even created mixed media leaves this way. Today, I bend acrylic glass and make painted wall sculptures that way.
I will never be the kind of artist that can turn out a particular style over and over again. I am not a machine. The work comes from my soul and is the very essence and expression of it. It is my hope that my work will bring its viewers joy.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when I have successfully push my boundaries and created something that brings me joy.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
If there is one overarching goal of my creative journey, it is learning new skills for my own pleasure.
