Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Plas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
YES! When I was younger a lot of careers of course were based on what financial security you would have. I was a dancer growing up and went to college for dance but changed my career choice because I wouldn’t “make any money”. I am grateful for the choices and experiences that I had but I do realize now that doing something you love and have a passion for is way better than doing something just for financial purposes. Ive realized that as long as you are passionate and hard-working you can make money doing anything! Especially in this day and age! So yes I wish I would’ve chased my dream earlier!
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up as a classically trained dancer spending most of my upbringing on stage performing with the professional company, Ohio Dance Theatre. Through performing, I realized at a young age I was fascinated by all things beauty!! I couldn’t wait for the performances and the freedom of applying stage makeup. I knew this was a passion of mine from a young age. I would spend my nights, and still do watching makeup videos and reading makeup books. I would recreate looks that I loved and was amazed watching the whole process come together. After relocating from Las Vegas to Tampa in 2011, I decided to pursue my passion of make-up artistry. I trained formally at the QC Makeup Academy and received my Certified International Makeup Artist Certification. I’ve worked as a freelance make-up artist for the renowned Giorgio Armani Beauty traveling all over Florida. I have also attended multiple masterclasses from celebrity makeup artists in NYC and Miami!!
I use all different brands of makeup from professional brands to drugstore products. What Im most proud of is taking the chance and believing in myself that I could do this passion of mine professionally. Unfortunately social media has changed the way people see themselves and others so one of the things that I try to bring to all my clients is the reminder that we all have skin issues, texture, wrinkles, etc. Makeup is about enhancing your beauty not covering up all your flaws. Don’t get me wrong we all can use some help with things but again I want you to be the best version of you!!! There are a lot of different artists out there and a lot of different techniques. Everyone has a style and I have found that mine is a little more on the softer glam side and very well blended.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I learned pretty quickly was that everyone is different and everyone has different needs. I really needed to get to know the client and what they like/wanted. Not everyone coming to get their makeup done wants full coverage over the top glam. So really asking a lot of questions and finding out there wants was something I needed to learn. Asking for inspiration pictures or showing them different colors that they are drawn too. I always give them my professional opinion and try to guide them but at the same time taking a step back and really listening to them.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ive always felt that when you look good you feel good. Not to put pressure on anyone to doll themselves up everyday but small changes can make a big difference. My goal is to help make people feel like the best version of themselves and hopefully they can take away some tips and tricks to practice at home. Self care is very important and I hope to inspire my clients to take some more time for themselves.
