Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Otto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I took a big risk when I finally quit my 15 year corporate career in human resources and recruiting and started my own business. I wasn’t sure it would work, if I could do it, if people would be interested or even in WHAT I was going to do for my business! I finally left my corporate career because I wanted to spend more time with my kids, specifically my son Cedar who was born needing multiple open heart surgeries. I didn’t want to waste a precious second with him.
I trained in dozens of healing arts and energy work modalities like astrology, shamanism and psychic and intuitive training. None of it was the right thing for me to do full time. So, I decided to do what I had learned over the year, which was helping people figure out what THEY wanted to do and how.
I started by helping people figure out what they wanted to do instead of their corporate jobs, so they could quit, and do work they love. Now, I’ve been in business for five years and I help healers, witches and priestesses to build and scale their unique purpose driven business too. I do that through heart centered marketing, sacred sales and visibility and money mindset support.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into this because I’ve studied different healing arts modalities for years, including being the marketing manager for a donation based yoga studio! I help my clients by working with them in one on one mentorship and in small, intimate group programs. I also have over $10,000 in self study courses available to anyone at any time! What sets me apart is that I’m a business mentor, but, I also have trained in healing arts work and understand it very well. I also have my BA and MA in Psychology and a deep understanding of how people think and operate from my 15 year corporate career in HR and Recruiting.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the need to hustle, strive and struggle in a 40 hour work week in order to make enough money to pay my bills. Entrepreneurship doesn’t work that way. And, pleasurable and playful success comes more from quality time engaging with clients and nature instead of hustling on a computer. The backstory is that I learned to work 9-5 jobs and so the transition to more fluid time and space in which to make money and connect with clients was very hard. Now, I have a quarter million dollar a year business, doing work I love and working far less hours than I ever did in corporate america. I get to spend quality time with my kids, enjoy my community homestead and yaks and chickens, and spend good time with friends.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I recently pivoted my business to focus fully on one on one coaching and a mini mastermind program called Six Figure Healer. Last year, I did in person retreats, VIP days, one on one coaching, a membership, a mastermind and many small group programs. It was way more than I had the energy and time for, as a mom of two small children, and having an auto immune disorder myself. This year is all about refinement. I’m focusing on helping my clients in my favorite way possible – in intimate work together to really understand their why, their programs and scalability and visibility online and in person.
