Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Nelson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Practice was the biggest thing that got me to where I am today. I would 6+ hours everyday just sitting and doing nails, whether simple or super complex. Learning different techniques by watching creators such as NailzbyDev certainly helped me become more skilled in my art. Also, things that could have helped me speed up my learning process would be that I wish I kept in mind when learning to do nails and art is to never compare yourself to others around you, that can discourage you and cause you to get frustrated and stop. Instead keep in mind they may be more advanced than you, but they may have been working at it much longer than you have and with time you will get to that level.
Skills that really helped me along the way were definitely discipline and patience, you genuinely have to have the discipline to know when to sit down and practice, for me I personally get easily distracted and have to fight to focus at times. On the other hand patience comes in because nails, especially nail art is not a quick task. Obstacles I faced were, managing my time, getting frustrated and burnt out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name Is Emily, I am the artist behind Vividnailz. I specialize in hand painted nail art, and very unique nail designs ranging from characters, movie scenes, 3D art, and much more. I started out as just a teen that was in love with going to the salon and getting my nails done, as time went on I became frustrated with going to salons and not being able to get designs I wanted. Eventually I figured that I could try and do my own nails, so I got a cheap Acrylic kit from Target and did my own very first set. After that I did my nails every other week and would constantly post them, over time my friends would start asking if I could do their nails. I wasn’t so sure at first because I was very shy and never saw myself doing others nails, but eventually I started to do my friends nails for practice. In the beginning it took me HOURS to complete one basic set, but thankfully I had friends that were patient enough to sit with me.
In 2020 I got laid off due to Covid, and because of lockdown had nothing better to do that practice nails every day. Then I got into making content and posting it on Instagram and TikTok which then started to gain attention. When the lockdown was lifted and things started to reopen finding a job was difficult, so I had to improvise and I decided to start taking clients.
Now, The rest is history and to this day I am taking clients and creating content full time. My client are amazing and love the creative and out of pocket sets we get to create together. I am most proud of how far I’ve come, and even though there were rough times I never gave up on myself and what I love. With my brand I hope to continue to create unique art, inspire other artist, and help them to thrive as well. Im always welcoming new clients so if you enjoy nail art as much as I do, I would love to have you in my chair!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting the freedom to try new things, collaborate with other artist alike, seeing my work inspire others, work with amazing brands and so forth. Also, the feeling of accomplishment when I see my sets go from just ideas to finished products.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
There was quite honestly multiple ways I used to gain an audience on social media. In the beginning I posted all of my work, no matter if I didn’t like them as much as others, many of the sets I didn’t think to much of people too a great liking too. I used hashtags for the area I was located in to get clients, and of course being different and creating sets that were unique helped as well.
