We were lucky to catch up with Emily Morehead recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
When we decided we wanted to take a risk and open The Couch Therapy we knew that there was a need in the community for inclusive care. Meaning come as you are, who ever you are and whatever you believe you are safe, seen and heard in our practice. The passion for being a spot in the community that offered holistic inclusive care helped us push through during the early building days and the beginning of the pandemic. Pivoting became laughable because all of our plans during the early COVID days required change and flexibility. It has caused us to build our practice more flexibility, lean in to listening to our clients needs and never saying a flat no- always saying “yes and”… which causes us to lean into flexibility. Honestly this is one of our biggest strengths as a practice and pushed me out of all of my comfort zones.
Building our practice has required grit. After long days and nights I am so proud that as a women owner in business that my two boys play “mommies office” and know that women can do anything. Raising them to understand the concept of nurturing something and watching it bloom is a really cool lesson that I get to pass down to them. If I was sharing advice to another mother who had a dream to build a business I would tell her that sharing the lesson of commitment, ownership and devotion is a lesson that she will pass down to her children and it will be worth all the hard moments.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Emily Morehead MA, LPC, PMH-C Co-Owner of The Couch Therapy and a Postpartum Support International Texas Board Member
I specialize in working with Postpartum Depression, Postpartum Anxiety, Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as well as general adjustments to parenthood. I also work with individuals and couples who are hoping to build their family and are struggling with infertility, adoption and different roads to parenthood. I work with relationships (traditional and non traditional) that are hoping to build a stronger foundation.
At the Couch we are a team of passionate, female psychotherapists who are highly trained and down to earth. We believe there is space for everyone at The Couch. We specialize in working with individuals, couples and families navigating anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, infertility, adoption, pregnancy and postpartum support, relationship patterns stemming from childhood, as well as everyday stressors and transitions.
Being a human can be difficult sometimes. We know that life changes (both big and small), complicated family relationships, grief and loss, identity integration, and parenthood can be incredibly complicated to manage on your own. Therapy will help you sift through your thoughts, emotions and gut feelings. It will be wonderful and it will be hard but we will join with you in the journey to change.
Our goal is to provide you with the experience of being heard, walking through your story, finding and accepting your true self, and working together to navigate the twists and turns that life brings. Our client’s can expect an eclectic approach and years of experience on the other side of the couch. We are LGBTQIA+ affirming and welcome all backgrounds to join us at The Couch. Our practice doesn’t have a one size fits all approach for any life values.
You won’t be alone on this journey. It would be our honor to walk with you.
Our practice believes in the benefits of traditional and nontraditional therapy. We provide both in-office therapy and sessions through Telehealth. We offer early morning and evening appointments to accommodate your schedule. We believe that the connection with your therapist matters so we offer a 15-minute, complementary, phone consultation to determine if we are the right fit for you.
Our therapy prices start at $85 per hour. Call today to find the right price point and personality fit for your therapist!
How’d you meet your business partner?
Monique and I worked together at a nonprofit agency. We were co-workers that enjoyed working together but when we took a work trip together to NYC things changed. We quickly realized that we were the ying and yang of each other, loved the same food, had the same humor and both had a odd obsession with The Real Housewives. Our friendship clicked and she is still the ying to my yang.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We built our reputation through our clients. It is a humble honor when we get a call that says “my best friend said you changed her life and I feel brave enough to care for myself through therapy”. Word of mouth referrals remind us that the relationship matters in therapy!
