We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Montes de Oca a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I started Marketing Geek Chic last year in May. I saw a gap in the marketing world for coaching clients and offering coaching sessions. I was currently working for a small agency and freelancing on the side. I wasn’t happy in my current state and wanted to create and run a business that I would be proud of and share my talents with B2B companies. I always loved the word geek and I actually consider myself a Marketing Geek always researching and learning new things in the marketing world. So I came up with the name Marketing Geek Chic and started to design my branding, coaching packages, and website launch. It took me a few months to put things together and this was a great time to reflect on what I wanted to create that would make me happy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been drawn to art and photography since I was little. I had creative blood running through me at a very early age. I decided to pursue my BA in Visual Communication. My first job out of college was as a staff photographer for a prominent local power company. I got to travel the state and take pictures. I did that for a few years, then moved into the graphic design area of the company. I stayed almost seven years at this company, but something within said that if you don’t get out, I would become stuck there. So I took the leap and left and went to work for an ad agency. After this, I worked in the marketing department at a small women-owned company. While there, I thought, why not start my small design firm? So I did, and my first company was created.
I now own my new company, Marketing Geek Chic, offering marketing coaching to my clients, branding, design, content creation, and online presence cultivation.
I solve my B2B client’s marketing struggles by supporting them as an extension of their team. My clients have been with me for over 15 years or more. I offer my clients a partnership environment and over 24 years of experience. I am proud of my passion for continuous learning and thrive on helping my clients succeed. I also create 30-second geek tip-of-the-week videos on social media that offer free marketing advice. Follow me on Instagram at www.instagram.com/marketinggeekchic/. You can also book a free 15-minute discovery call from my website at www.marketinggeekchic.com.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I started my first company, I networked like crazy and volunteered my talents and time to give back to different organizations. That presence established me in the marketplace as a true expert in my field.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Treat your clients like a partnership, and they will be loyal to you. You might not need to expand if you establish a certain number of clients and put them first. More isn’t always better. It is more about the relationships and the quality of your service.
