We recently connected with Emily Mobley and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took out a 15k loan to start Gray Nutrition (my dietitian private practice in 2019). This was absolutely life-changing and terrifying. Before this I ran a dietitian private-practice for 3 years spinning my wheels on inefficient processes, working well over-time, and I was 100% at burn out. It was not until I listened to a podcast that said… to really truly grow your business you have to “hire people smarter than you”. In 2019 I took that leap and I finally committed to myself that I was either all in doing this correctly or all out. I was no longer going to waste my time and that if I wanted to make my dream practice come to life I needed to invest more money to make more money and scale. So I took that leap… and it was hands down the best decision I ever made. I have 10x’ed my business more than I every thought possible because I have the right people on my team. I am a big believer that to truly grow and be successful in business you have to put skin in the game, have accountability to your goals, and hire people smarter than you! This mindset has truly changed the trajectory of my life and my passion.

Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my private practice back in 2016 but I think my whole journey to where I am today started back in the 8th grade when I drank slimfast for lunch because I had to get in a bathing suit for 8th grade day at my Junior high.
I grew up in a culture (as all of us have) that was inundated with dieting messages. Majorly around the theme of eat less, exercise more, fit in this perfect body… you were praised for skipping meals and eating as little as possible. It was extremely toxic.
Due to this I spent 15 years of my life doing exactly what society had told me to do… “eat less, exercise more” and you will find your way to health.
This only found me in a terrible relationship with food, constantly yo-yoing in my weight and feeling like I couldn’t “enjoy” life like everyone around me was … eating the food, drinking the wine, and truly living in the moment.
Long story short this led me on a mission to transforming my health and really learning how nutrition, body composition, and metabolism works… I not only went to school for Medical Dietetics but I decided to make it my life’s mission to walk women away from the crash diet mentality that continues to make us more and more unhealthy and truly teach women HOW to transform their meals, metabolism, and mindset the RIGHT way so they no longer have to invest in another diet program again. And that is when Gray Nutrition was born.
It has been a wild journey over the last 6 years but I have been able to transform 100’s of women’s lives with my Gray Method and most of all give them their life back and pull them out of the perpetual diet cycle.
A lot of people ask me… how are you different than other diets…
I think when we think of nutrition we think “eat this, not that” list and being in a state of restriction. Whether that be restricting foods, calories, times we eat, etc. You know avoiding the desserts, and the alcohol, and the donut with our kids only to sit in a puddle of misery. All the decisions around food are made in fear of not wanting to “mess up” And its very negative and awful for our mindset.
My sole goal for my client is for them to eat like a normal person. I want them to enjoy a dessert with their family, a donut with their kid, a glass of wine with their girlfriends and still push results and feel their best self. My approach is not restrictive, its about empowering women to make the right choices with their eating through understanding the “why” behind what they are doing and providing them with really simple strategies that keep them consistent with healthier choices. I think when people know “how” to eat vs just “what” to eat their whole world is changed and they never feel like they have to diet again. And this is what Gray Nutrition offers. We do this through either my online DIY course called the Gray30 or within my high touch 1-on-1 coaching program.
What is working with me like from start to finish?
Imagine this… you walk into you initial assessment completely stressed about your food choices, you have yo-yo’ed in your weight for years on end and you are SO over fitting your lifestyle into a diet. You have tried everything, keto, low carb, fasting, weight watchers, shakes… . You finally are ready to figure out a nutrition plan that works for YOU and that you actually can sustain the results with. You are ready to approach it the “right” way vs go on a crash diet.
When you finish working with Gray Nutrition you:
-wake up in the morning and know exactly what you should be eating that day to move the needle in your results.
-you know “how” to eat vs just “what” to eat to to give you energy, mitigate your cravings, increase your performance in the gym and in your job, and feel satisfied after meal time vs starving
-you have a better relationship with food and you understand that your week looks no different than your weekend, you know how to conquer vacations, parties, date nights and still eat the “fun” food while seeing results.
-You no longer live by the scale because you know how metabolism and body composition actually works and you are more focused off of feeling your best self vs what a number on a box tells you.
And most importantly you finally feel you have solidified a nutrition plan that fits YOUR lifestyle so you never have to go on another diet again.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I hired a business coach in 2019 that has taught me the “game” of social media marketing and how to scale my business online. This was the best decision I ever made. She has completely transformed my perspective on how you attract clients to your private practice and nurture them for a sale. It has really come back to consistency of showing up, authenticity, validating peoples feelings, showing relatability, and then most important giving an amazing client experience/tons of value to my clients.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I always thought “I can handle this on my own” when starting my business and honestly, I did for 2 years. But this just led me to inefficient processes, stagnant cash flow, and complete burn out. I was working 12-16 hour days for 2 years grinding to make myself successful. I scaled my business to 6 figures and over 400 clients seen but I was NOT happy. I quit cold turkey in 2017 and gave up all my clients.
I hit 2018-2019 and I told myself, there has to be a better way to do this. So I took out a 15k loan, hired a business coach, and took my business online. BEST decision I ever made. I maybe work 6-8 hour days and have an amazing thriving private practice with an amazing team. Sometimes the best things are on the other side of fear and doing something totally outside of your comfort zone.
