We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Meyers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
It took me some time to think of “Garlic Head,” and I actually changed the name 6 months into starting my site! The name’s meaning it twofold:
1) I (like many people) use garlic in most of my savor recipes and have loved it from a young age. I have a recipe on my site for Simple Garlic Pasta, which was actually my favorite childhood recipe. This represents my cooking “origin story” as it was one of the first things I learned to cook for myself. I still make it biweekly.
2) “Garlic Head” is also a play on words that I found resonant with the message I want to deliver to my readers. I do not think anyone should take themselves too seriously when cooking, and that the kitchen should be a place of fun, Eating well should not be a burden! I believe. there are many ways to bring a childlike sense of enjoyment into our daily cooking habits.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started Garlic Head with the mission of democratizing the “healthy eating” space while expanding knowledge of plant-based living. I have been a vegetarian for my entire life and vegan for about the last 10 years. However, I do not really like restrictive labels around diets — many people have negative connotations around what it means to be vegan. For example, I do not like focusing on what foods I “can’t” have (I am lucky to not have allergies so “can” have whatever I want)!
Instead, the term “plant-based” focuses on the bounty of delicious ingredients that exist in a vegetable-centric diet. I believe in building a diet that works for your and your personal lifestyle, free from the judgements of others.
I also know that a diet rich in plants is one of the easiest ways to decrease humanity’s impact on climate change. Foregoing meat even just one day/week can have a massive impact on carbon emissions, so it’s a small but influential step a person can take.
On the site, I provide recipes for drinks, breakfasts, main meals, and desserts. I also offer free meal plans, grocery guides, and ebook resources. I love food photography, so each recipe is accompanied with photos and video instruction!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is an ever-shifting target that changes incredibly rapidly. The constant I have found is to focus mainly on creating content that YOU (as a business owner) truly connect with that resonates with your values. There are other people out there that value those things as well! Your business will not be for everyone and this is OK.
Content should speak to your personal story. As best you can, do not get to tied up in follower counts. Instead, focus on nurturing the followers you already have — this will lead to a heavily engaged, more sustainable platform.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
I currently earn money through a variety of channels, including brand partnerships, photography contracts, ad revenue, and affiliate sales.
