We were lucky to catch up with Emily Malyszka & Jasmine Zarrin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily Malyszka & Jasmine Zarrin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
Jasmine: I think we started this at exactly the right time where we perfectly overlapped with each other. We had cemented ourselves as really close friends, gotten a better understanding of our dynamics and communication styles by being roommates, and were in a place in our careers to allow some extra silliness and creativity in our downtime. We started this podcast neither too late nor too early, and I really don’t think there’s much we’d change if we could go back in time.
Emily: I agree with Jasmine. We really started this podcast at the right moment in our lives. Personally, I desired a creative outlet, and we had discussed starting a podcast while living together but something clicked into place in 2024 and we finally followed through on it. If I think too hard about it, I regret not starting a podcast 10 years ago, but it wouldn’t have been with Jasmine and I can’t imagine a better partner.
Emily Malyszka & Jasmine Zarrin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Jasmine: As we mentioned earlier, Emily, myself, and a third friend we lovingly refer to as Lizbit used to be roommates. Emily and I worked from home while Lizbit would go into the office and every day she’d come home feeling like she missed all the hijinks Emily and I got up to that day. Thus, the joke became that Emily and I needed to create a podcast so Lizbit could be kept up to date. And one day Emily and I decided what if we took this joke a step further. One could ask maybe a step too far? Regardless, Dear Lizbit was born.
The goal of our podcast is to maybe put a smile on your face, maybe make you laugh, maybe teach you something new, but to always make you feel like you’re just hanging out on the couch with the two of us yapping. Not only has this podcast required us to constantly teach ourselves new information with our deep dives, but we learn a little more about each other every week and discovering there’s still more to learn about someone you’re so close to and consider a best friend is a really lovely thing.
Emily: I think what sets us apart is our friendship, how in-tune we are with each other, and our deep desire to have a good time. We’ve agreed the second this becomes a chore is the second we stop recording, so I hope our authenticity comes through in every episode. Like Jasmine said, it started with a silly conversation and then once we realized Jasmine had microphones from past projects we said “Why not?”. The first episode was really for us to prove we followed through on something but 50+ episodes later, there’s no stopping us now.
Jasmine: We are not influencers. We are just commenting on things we find interesting or, in many cases, infuriating. We will do our best to try and give accurate information, and you’ll have a good time listening along with us.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Jasmine: We’re constantly learning something new, which we don’t always get to do as adults. A listener letting us know that we made them laugh just as hard as we made ourselves laugh is a wonderful and rewarding feeling.
Emily: Hearing from listeners will always be the best thing ever. Having that sense of community is so important and rewarding as a creative.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Jasmine: From the beginning, Emily and I agreed that we didn’t want to do this if we were no longer having fun. So, I think the fact that we still put out an episode every week shows that we’re still having a good time doing these deep dives and yapping at each other. We just want to make Lizbit’s day a little bit better.
Emily: My ultimate goal would be to build a community around Dear Lizbit that’s inclusive, fun, and never takes itself too seriously.
