We recently connected with Emily Kissa and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The topic I chose is meaningful projects as I have had a couple collaborations in areas I am passionate. One specifically was a collaboration with huddleverse which brings awareness to mental health. I love being able to use my platform to bring awareness to different topics I find meaningful like mental health, bio conservation, and different problems with the ocean., especially through my small business. My most meaningful project was working the clothing line I designed called the “I love you” line in which I created hoodie and t shirt designs to raise awareness for mental health.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I came up with the idea for my small business during covid and eventually put thought into material 3 years later. I create jewelry and clothing specifically designed to bring light to mental health and how important it is. I created this business while working 3 other jobs and attending high school. I’ve always been someone who puts everything into my work so all of my designs are crafted with love. I’m most proud of being able to even start up and get my designs out there and I am hoping to further my reach in the upcoming years!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Something truly difficult about the journey as a creative is the timeline. It takes an incredibly long time to get your name and/or brand out there and to start bringing in sales. The amount of time required to market your company as well is taxing. It can be such a fun experience but there will be times where just the marketing and trying to reach people is incredibly draining while also trying to support yourself. I personally took a while to learn how to balance everything. My biggest advice is to take breaks when needed and put your health over deadlines (reasonable ones at least).
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being in the creative world is the people you meet and interact with. Whether those are other business owners or clients, there are so many cool stories that people share and I love learning about others. It’s also definitely rewarding when you create a new bond with someone. Having these supportive people in your corner really helps when things are slow or moral is low. I’ve met a ton of cool people and I would not change a thing.
