We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
Every job prepares you for the next. We are always learning and evolving.
Several years ago, I was a caregiver. That job taught me to be gentle with people. I carried those lessons into my next job working in a call center. Everyone has struggles. Having empathy towards others is an important customer service skill.
Things are never perfect in any job, but turning those struggles into lessons will help you in your next endeavor. All of my previous jobs prepared me to be a business owner by teaching me work ethic and tenacity.
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
During the pandemic, I started feeling overwhelmed by the news and claustrophobic being locked inside. I was living in scenic Santa Rosa, California, so I started taking day trips to places close to home, but far from the public. I was able to take photos that under normal circumstances would be impossible, because I was too busy or the location would have been filled with people or vehicles. The pandemic offered a unique opportunity to see the world without the clutter. The process was therapeutic for me, but it also seemed to touch something in people stuck at home viewing my work on their computers. It allowed people to experience the world in a new way through the lens of pandemic emptiness. Spill The Tea Photography was born out of that void.
I am most proud of building my following from the ground up by building relationships. I partner with my passions; dog rescues, travel, etc. so that I can build my portfolio while doing things I enjoy. You have to be willing to keep putting yourself out there networking with potential customers while doing what you love.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built up my social media by being consistent. Post every day, sometimes multiple times a day sharing beautiful images. I feel like my work speaks for itself.
I am blessed to have a public relations representative who helps me finesse my words.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting in a part of life. If something isn’t working try something else. Society focuses too much on money and not enough on happiness. Money is important, being happy is more important. If you do what you love the money will eventually flow.
