We recently connected with Emily Horton and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Functional wellness emphasizes a holistic approach to health, focusing on optimizing the body’s natural functioning and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. Listen to Your body. Pay attention to how different foods, activities, and lifestyle changes make you feel. This self-awareness can guide you toward what your body needs for optimal health. Many of the clients that we see have been struggling with their health for many years. For example, one of my clients came to me struggling with anxiety, stomach pain, a reoccurring UTI that lasted for 3 years. She had been on numerous antibiotics which destroyed her gut microbiome. She had been to several specialist and could never find an answer. We ran a GI map on her and discovered extreme dysbiosis of her gut. We began focusing on her diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction and began her on focused supplements to treat her dysbiosis. Within 3 weeks, she had more energy and had a renewed sense of calm. She had also been free of a UTI since the beginning of her protocol.
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Registered Nurse and Board Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. I grew up in Simpsonville SC. After high school I decided to complete my education at the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology. Thinking I had my life figured out I quickly realized finding a job in anthropology proved to be more difficult than I thought. After a lot of praying, I realized that my passion for people would lead me to nursing.
I worked in the hospital setting for over a decade to finally realize there had to be a better way. As valuable as my education was to me I felt a drive to learn more about functional wellness. After seeing my son battle severe eczema and being placed on topical medication that was so strong even the pharmacist did not want to fill it because they felt it was too toxic for him. I felt helpless as a parent. When I hit my forties, I started to notice increasing brain fog, extreme fatigue, and weight gain around the middle. It seemed like I was constantly caught in a fight or flight state. I went to several doctors and had the usual test done only to be told my bloodwork looked normal and ”welcome to your forties”. Well, that was unacceptable. I knew I needed answers. This lit a fire in me and I decided that I would take my health into my own hands. Functional Diagnostic Nutrition was the answer that I had been praying for! It has given me a better understanding of how unique our bodies are and by implementing healthy habits and lifestyle changes we can dramatically reduce or reverse chronic illness.

Functional wellness is not just about addressing symptoms; it’s about understanding the root causes of health issues and guiding individuals towards sustainable, holistic well-being.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partners and I have been friends for over a decade. One of them, Sabrina, I actually went to nursing school with. During nursing school we would always question why. Why does this person have diabetes? Why did this person develop stomach issues? We always were drawn to the functional side of wellness. I worked with Kristy in the hospital and Sabrina introduced me to Tina during nursing school.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For us the most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been word of mouth. Social media has also helped us grow our clientele by being able to reach people and tell everyone about functional wellness. Also we have been involved in wellness expos and conferences.
