We recently connected with Emily Hogg and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Prior to starting my real estate career, I was a bedside a nurse for 10 years. I loved being a nurse and although I stepped away to create a better work/life balance for my family, I learned valuable lessons and I do miss aspects of it. The biggest lesson I learned from my time as a nurse is that sometimes the best gift I can give is my presence. I get choked up thinking about the times that impacted me most as a nurse and almost every one of those memories is a time that I slowed down, set aside my task list, and offered my attention and listening ear to a patient. Meeting physical needs for someone when they can’t meet them for themselves is powerful but actually not as powerful as stepping into a moment of loneliness or pain and providing a small bit of comfort and relief. I try to remember this and take it into my current roles – as a mother, a wife, a friend, and a real estate agent.

Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a local real estate agent in Colorado Springs. I got into the industry after having my own experiences buying and selling homes and also watching my husband as an agent for several years. My first home purchase was a single young woman and I experienced what a difference it can make to have someone walk alongside you during this huge step in life. I wanted to provide that level of support and advocacy for my own clients. I also grew up watching all the HGTV shows and my parents would spend hours on a Sunday driving our whole family around walking through open houses and collecting “for sale” brochures out of boxes just for fun. This instilled a bit of an excitement and love for this process and for finding beautiful spaces. As an agent, I love getting to assist people in finding the space that they want to grow and make memories in. I also understand the gravity of the decision to buy or sell a home and my ultimate goal in every transaction is to make sure that my clients feel fully informed and able to handle the financial commitment that they are making.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot I made was switching from a nursing career to starting my own venture as a real estate agent. As a nurse, I would show up for 12 or so hours, work hard and complete whatever tasks I needed to for my patients, and then I could go home and turn off my brain, Being a business owner means never turning your brain off – now if I’m not actively working with a client, I am finding ways to generate leads, market, and sustain the business. There are definitely pros and cons of each of these but I do love having complete control over the amount of energy I put into my business and getting to make it exactly what I want it to be.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I have found one of the best resources to be podcasts of other real estate agents, business owners, and creatives! It’s an amazing way to hear people share their stories and advice and I think it tends to be very relevant and current to issues I may be facing. Plus I can consume it while driving or working out. Some of my favorites are the Goal Digger Podcast, Agent Rise, and the Tom Ferry Podcast.
