We were lucky to catch up with Emily Hartmann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I started practice 8 years ago with another surgeon. We had a very active practice from day one and we brought in fun new modalities such as Coolsculpting. I had completed a cosmetic surgery fellowship so my focus was and is breast and body contouring. I also do reconstruction which includes breast cancer, gender affirming surgery, and breast reductions.
After 3 years I experienced a high level of burnout. When the COVID shut down took place I had the opportunity to re evaluate my life. I longed for a practice with a more holistic focus. I also dreamed of opening a wellness spa. I decided to break free and venture out on my own.
Once the new energy shift clicked into its new mode everything happened with lightening focus. My creative juices were flowing and I loved calling the shots. I broke through the fear of being in solo practice. I have learned a great deal about my resilience. As it turns out I’m an intuitively led leader which brings me a unique style. Breaking from the traditional practice template was frightening but has brought me such joy in my work. I’ve learned you have to look deep within your heart to blaze your own divine path.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into plastic surgery with a desire to help people live their best lives. It’s not exactly curing cancer but it helps people on a more emotional level. I love the surgeries which utilize my artistic skills. I am most proud of the way I connect with each patient on a body, soul, mind level. My practice is holistic and utilizes modalities to enhance the experience such as hypnotherapy, lymphatic massage, and herbal supplements. We offer the full plastic surgery experience with surgery, injectables, lasers, Coolsculpting, and estheticians.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’ve used an excellent vision coach named Samantha Jo Harvey. She keeps me focused on the positive energy and highest vibrational work. She keeps me on an elevated path forward.
A book called Mind Over Medicine by Lissa Rankin, was pivotal to leaning into my intuition.
The following video from Mindvalley gave me the vision for my ideal work culture. We no longer lead by fear and intimidation. We foster a positive work culture that build people up and they can perform their highest potential. https://youtu.be/T8ZFU4FoNvY?si=8SZcOSOarUjbTKLr
Any advice for managing a team?
Early in my practice I had a business manager whose style was based on fear and intimidation. It was a very negative work environment. Once I realized the impact it had on our culture I removed her from command. We now have a team that functions harmoniously, to build each other up. We’re still in the early phase of establishing a better culture. I can’t think of a better way to show up for my staff than to get rid of a bully and truly listen to their needs. That positive energy flows and the patients can feel the love walking through the door.
