We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Fuchsen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I honestly wish I started investing my time into photography sooner than I did. I started Dark Trix Photography back in early 2018. I purchased a DSLR camera after wanting to take up photography just as a hobby. This was a year or two after taking a film photography class in high school. I really enjoyed taking photos but didn’t expect I’d go down the professional path. I wish I utilized being in high school and having a DSLR camera. I feel I could’ve exposed myself to a lot more opportunities and different jobs. There was media coverage everywhere ranging from the school plays with behind-the-scenes photos, to sporting events, school gatherings and events, and so many more. I never tried to put my foot in the door and I’m most definitely kicking myself for it. Even though I wish I could have started my photography business sooner than I did, I’m still happy that I took that step and began the professional journey back in 2018.
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, my name is Emily! I am the owner and operator of Dark Trix Photography LLC. Back in 2018 is when I started my professional photography career. I began my career with live concert photography. It was something that always interested me. Whenever I went to concerts and took photos on my phone I just was never satisfied. Then a few months after purchasing my first DSLR camera (a Canon Rebel T6) I decided I was going to use that camera for more than just photos of my pets and whatever I could find around me. I took my camera to my first show back in 2018 and ever since then I have fallen in love with concert photography. For a couple of years that’s what I specialized in. I still love concert photography wholeheartedly, but I knew I needed to start branching out into other categories like wedding, portrait, event, etc. And that’s exactly what I did. I love all types of photography honestly. But now portrait photography/cosplay photography is coming up fast to become my favorite type. Through the years of shooting, I also started to explore and find my own style. As of now I mainly like to specialize in dark photography. Anything macabre or has a dark horror essence really captures my interest. I’ve been able to create so many eerie, spooky, and captivating shoots it makes me so happy. I think that’s really what sets me apart from other photographers, that dark style. It’s amazing how many times people have booked with me just because they loved how dark, and horror based my photography is. Even though I specialize in dark photography this doesn’t mean I’m only limited to that type of style now. I’m always interested in making new connections and working with new clientele. You never know what amazing ideas will come about from the shoot. I’m available to do any and all types of photography! You name it and I can do it! I hope I get to work with you all in the future to create some breathtaking work!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel the best way society can help support artists and creatives is take them more into consideration. Instead of purchasing art from large chain stores that make millions of dollars, they should go to local artists! There are so many creatives out there that make breathtaking work, but they are always overshadowed by those huge companies. Instead of going to chain stores that provide cookie cutter photography, reach out to their nearest local photographer! They would love to make that new connection and work with the person reaching out! Another way is on social media! Since social media is so prominent in this day and age is one of the easiest and best ways to help support artists without having to purchase anything. A like, share, and follow can help get the ball rolling for people. Sharing someone’s page that provides a service or art can expose them to other people that may need that service or enjoy that artwork to have that person share it as well. Then it’s a domino effect of exposure.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing for being a photographer to me is to see the way my work moves people. My favorite is when I do boudoir sessions and see that person completely fill with self-confidence. Understandably, people doing boudoir shoots for the first time can be a bit nerve-wracking for them. But after taking a couple of shots I show the client the photos I just took. As soon as they lay eyes on the preview screen their face lights up so bright. They can’t believe that’s them. I can just see them fill with self-confidence and they open up so much more knowing that trust is there that I can take these photos of them, and it makes them feel good in the end. Another example is when people look at my photo prints and they just talk about all the emotions they have while looking at them. I love hearing about all the feelings people have when seeing my artwork. I feel that’s the biggest reward of all. Being able to move people with a single photo.
