We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Frederick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
n my journey toward becoming a business owner, one of the most significant experiences that shaped my approach was my time spent volunteering with Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), a nonprofit para-church ministry. but first, a little bit about my background. After completing my bachelor’s degree in business, I worked in the mortgage industry as an underwriter, and then loan officer. Once I had kids, I decided to stay home with them. However, my desire to stay busy and contribute to my community led me to volunteer where and when I could. During those years, I engaged in extensive volunteer work at my kids, school, at my church, and with (BSF). For five years, I was on staff at my local BSF class as an administrator, and this role allowed me to interact with a diverse group of women, each with their unique backgrounds and needs. Helping them and facilitating their growth was incredibly fulfilling.I
The key lesson I learned during this time was the importance of building relationships and creating an inclusive environment. I had the opportunity to develop skills in time management, event planning , volunteer coordination, and creating a warm atmosphere that encouraged participation. I also had to submit monthly reports, which taught me the importance of accountability and clear communication. But, most importantly, I learned how to depend on God to do everything the work required.
When my youngest graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to return to the workforce. My time with BSF had instilled in me a passion for helping others, especially women and I sought a business opportunity that aligned with those values. After meeting with several franchisors, I found 30 Minute Hit, which resonated with my vision of creating a supportive community of women.
In essence, the most important lesson I gained from my previous experience is that successful business ownership hinges on fostering genuine connections and a supportive environment. This has not only influenced my approach to leadership but also shaped the culture I aim to cultivate in my business.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share a bit about the unique fitness experience we offer at 30 Minute Hit in Prosper. Our passion is building a community of women empowering women! I recognized a gap in the market around me for a workout that was not only effective but also tailored to the needs and aspirations of women of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels.
30 Minute Hit is a place where they can feel safe to work out without being judged. Not only is our facility women only, but it is also a circuit which means women do not have to be part of a class where they might feel uncomfortable keeping up or having a lot of eyes on them. Now, this doesn’t mean they’re not going to get an incredible workout. Our dedicated trainers are always on the floor, ready to support and motivate each participant, ensuring that everyone feels welcomed and empowered.
At 30 Minute Hit, we provide a one-of-a-kind boxing, kickboxing, and self-defense circuit that is designed to be flexible, fast, fun, and effective. Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Getting real here, once, I made a horrible mistake with a proof. Somehow, my phone number got changed, and I didn’t catch it before sending it to the printers. I ended up ordering over a thousand flyers, which I happily distributed for weeks before I realized that my number was wrong. Several times, people would tell me they tried to call but the number didn’t work.
When I realized my mistake, I was just sick over it, but my son helped me put it in perspective. He said, “Look how good you’re doing in spite of handing out the wrong number. Now that you know and have corrected it, you’re going to do even better!”
It taught me the importance of taking the time to double-check everything—especially when it’s going to print!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there that get a gym membership and then stop using it. In the beginning, I felt bad charging the people that had stopped coming, but my team and I are invested in these women. We want them to have better, healthier lives. We want to see them step into who they are meant to be with confidence. I had to stop feeling bad about processing those payments. If someone signs a 12 month agreement with me and I am keeping up my end of the agreement, they need to uphold theirs. I still have to pay the rent and pay my trainers whether the Member comes or not. I plan and commit my advertising budget based on what is supposed to be paid. This is still my least favorite part of the job, but if I want to stay in business, it has to be done. When the Member keeps coming and keeps working on herself, when she puts her health as a priority, everyone wins! That’s what keeps me going! I have a passion for helping people and wanting to see them succeed. Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone’s victory, no matter how big or small!
