Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Fincher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
Thank you so much for having me! This is a great question and I am honored to address it. I believe that in today’s workplace, it is crucial to create an environment that advocates inclusivity, fair pay, and a culture of growth. When I was in high school one of the worst jobs I had was due to its unstable workplace. This was an experience where I was able to see firsthand what made a workplace toxic and, on the opposite side of the spectrum, what it takes to elevate the workplace and how it can be more inclusive.
When I began my business in 2021, creating a workplace wasn’t an issue at the forefront of my mind. My office was essentially a coffee shop or my own home where my assistant was my cat, Ceecee. Now that I am moving into the second year of my business, I am in the process of hiring my first employee and putting more thought into how to create that inclusive workspace.
As a queer business owner, I have a special opportunity to lay the foundation of how I want to create that environment including a strict non-discrimination policy, providing fair pay, and offering higher leveled positions. These are the driving factors as I hire my first employee and all future employees!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I mentioned earlier that marketing can be a beast and social media is the head of that beast. This is because most business owners don’t have the time for social media, they may not fully understand it, and because it can become addicting!
Let me preface this story by mentioning that every brand is different and how you operate your brand voice may be different from mine! Stay true to your own voice when building an online audience-
Late last year, my Instagram was hacked and I lost almost seven years of content, photos, and over 4k followers. I had just launched my business and was devastated at the thought of starting over especially after building such a great relationship with my followers. I decided to create another Instagram account and it was the best decision I could have made!
One of the best ways I was able to build my audience on social media is through time, strategy, and vulnerability. The timing was due to my need to build an authentic follower list because the reality of social media is that the best things sometimes take time. I was able to break 1k followers in 4 months- this was through strategy! Building a strategy can sound overwhelming, but it will ultimately be what helps you grow the most. Your strategy could look like a series, an aesthetic, and so much more. Yet, your strategy will not perform well without vulnerability. In this day and age, people are craving real stories from real bigger (and smaller) brands. You can build this vulnerability by showing behind the scenes of your process, posting to your stories, or simply asking your followers how their week is going. There is no need to post all details of your life like your best friend’s cousin’s gallbladder surgery. Instead, create a conversation where your audience can join and even chime in.
These three things have been my foundation and I have seen great numbers and success! Hopefully, it can help you as well!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Reputation can make or break your business. So, how do you create an authentic reputation in a dog-eat-dog industry without kissing a*s or stepping on others’ necks? One of the biggest pieces of advice I want to give is similar to what I mentioned about social media which is to be authentic. Authenticity opens the door to personability and genuine work. By building an authentic relationship with every person you meet you are able to create trust which every person longs for. If I can trust someone, I will want to work with them. I work to build that with all my clients, friends, and community to hopefully, in return, build a trustworthy, hard-working reputation in my market.
