We were lucky to catch up with Emily Ferrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
I moved to Colorado in 2014 to attend the University of Colorado Law School. Many law school courses are taught in the Socratic method – where you’re cold-called at random with continuous, probing questions meant to foster critical thinking. I loved this style, and loved law school in general. Colorado Law has tremendous faculty, and I was fortunate enough to learn from incredible individuals – experts in various legal fields, and individuals who went on to work in the federal government, serve presidential administrations, and even become U.S. Supreme Court Justices.
One professor I had for several courses was widely considered an expert in his field. He had published numerous books, taught for decades, led lectures, and even worked with various Native American Tribal Nations to create Bears Ears National Monument. The piece of advice he gave, in every class he taught, was that the most important thing any law school student could do was to adopt a dog. The first time I heard him share this piece of advice, I wasn’t certain if he was saying it in jest, or not.
As I graduated from legal education and built the early stages of my legal career, I quickly realized that he was completely serious about the importance of adopting a dog – and I had greater appreciation for why he shared this advice. As attorneys, we handle serious matters, and play a role in our clients’ fates – whether that’s their freedom, their finances, their business, or, as in my practice, their families. It is crucial work that I take seriously and I realize my professor, in stressing the importance of adopting a dog, was actually sharing with his students the necessity of finding a way to maintain a healthy level of pressure and stress, and to remember to get outside and enjoy each day.
I love the work I do now, working with clients to protect themselves, their families, and their assets. It’s important work and as I remind clients, we can do the work we do because they are alive. It’s important that we all continue to remember to celebrate each day, spend time with our loved ones, and live our lives – whether that’s taking our dog for a hike, watching our children play, or spending time with friends.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an attorney and focus on comprehensive estate planning: wills, trusts, and guardianship. In a nutshell, at New Parent Law, I help my clients legally and financially protect themselves, their families, and their assets. I focus on an education-based approach. I want my clients to have the information they need to make the decisions that are best for them and their families.
My clients continuously share how simple we make the process and how much they appreciate the information and guidance we provide. We are available for our clients every step of the way and will be there for their families when most needed in incredibly difficult times. We don’t just serve clients once. Instead, we are trusted advisors and partner with our clients for life.
In knowing that they have an attorney to whom they can turn when life gets most difficult, and a comprehensive plan in place to ensure that their spouse or partner, and their children, will be okay if something happens to them, New Parent Law provides clients with tremendous peace of mind. I love connecting with my clients, and now call many of them friends.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
At New Parent Law, we are proud of the fact that we are approachable and walk clients through every step of the process. As a parent myself, I understand how difficult it may be for my clients to make certain decisions and to have certain types of conversations. I am able to provide this understanding while also sharing advice and insights as I would with my own family and friends.
On top of that, my clients love running into us in the community – whether it’s at the recreation center, a local playground, or a PTO event. Even as a law firm and legal professionals, we are accessible to our clients throughout the estate planning process and afterward as questions may arise.
Our clients speak highly of New Parent Law in local groups, Facebook parents’ forums, and elsewhere. I love meeting someone who was referred by a client and appreciate the trust that our clients – and prospective clients – place in us. It’s a level of trust and responsibility we take incredibly seriously.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
In law school, we were not taught about how to run a business. While everyone starts somewhere – and every law firm that is now established needed to start at some point – it can be intimidating to start your own practice. I had to focus on my mindset and energy. I knew I was a great attorney. I knew that I would ensure that my clients are incredibly well taken care of. The biggest challenge for me was figuring out where to start and then jumping in.
