We recently connected with Emily Cunningham and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I chose the name Opal Haze because I wanted it to be something personal and truly meaningful. It took me about a month to fully decide but the process was so worth it.
My birthday is October 1st so I am a total lover of all things opal. They are timeless and unique. There are never two that look the same. Like an opal, I want my brand to be timeless and rare.
I grew up in rural, central Pennsylvania in a log cabin. A lot of the decor in our home was rustic and antique. One of the many pieces was a beautiful painting my dad bought. It was called Autumn’s Haze (Autumn is my mom’s name). I always had a sense of peace when I would look at it. I decided to use Haze because it made me think of where I came from.
The hummingbird in my logo is for my Grandma, Pauline. She is 94 years old and one of the most driven people I’ve ever met. They are her favorite animal and the best finishing touch to my brand name and logo!
I hope everyone can see the intention and thought that I put into my business name!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi everyone! My name is Emily. I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with my husband and our chihuahua, Gunner. I am the proud owner of Opal Haze Boutique.
A lot of the inspiration for my business came from my country roots. I grew up in rural Bedford County, on a 60 acre farm. I started riding horses at a young age and showed in 4-H for many years. I always loved wearing hats and cowgirl boots. The more cowgirl the better! That’s where my love for all things country began. I also always remember my dad and uncles wearing the OG trucker hats. The trucker hat is a classic and total statement piece. So it was easy when I decided to start my business to include things that had those same vibes I enjoyed growing up.
Our custom trucker hat bar has hundreds of options to choose from for every member of the family. Customers choose their perfect hat then add on patches, pins and hat chains to make their look complete. It is a totally customized experience. Who doesn’t love that? Then the hats are heat pressed right in front of the customer at our events! It’s such a satisfying experience.
We also offer custom mini branding of leather and cowhide accessories. We have letters and several symbols available to choose from. We also offer customers the option to drop off locally or send us their hats and boots to brand.
We do private parties and public pop-up events.
We have an online shopify store where customers can see all of our collections! www.opalhazeboutiquellc.com
I want to thank everyone that has supported OHB so far on our journey! There will be so much more to come as we evolve our ideas and inspiration.

How did you build your audience on social media?
One of the toughest things I had to do when I started my busniess was to get comfortable with social media. To be completely honest, I didn’t have it for almost 14 years. It was very scary putting myself out there and not being sure how people would respond. I’ve realized over time that people have reacted positively to me because I just try to be as genuine as possible. It’s important to be true to yourself and what you want to put out into the world.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
New clients have been referred to me from other small business owners. The small business community is amazing. The support of others goes a long way.
