We were lucky to catch up with Emily Cabrera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents taught me dedication and hard work. My mom has always been the most hardworking stay at home mom whom I’ve always looked up too. I have always admired how she did everything she did for her own 4 children, while creating side hustles for herself. I acknowledged how important it is for a child to have a parent at home for guidance. Watching and appreciating that from my mom, I realized I wanted to be that source of guidance, nurture and love to kids of my own.
My dad is the most hardworking man I’ve ever met. He is a ‘workaholic’! For as long as I can remember, my dad has worked early mornings, late nights at times, weekends for side jobs, holidays, and his birthdays. My dad has maintained his clients and has attracted many many more due to his hard work, dedication, kindness and respect. He’s taught me the importance of creating a relationship with your clients, while still keeping it professional. My parents together taught me, patience, understanding, and teamwork. I wanted to have a family of my own, as caretaker of my own children, but also, creating a business that allows me to have the best of both worlds. I love doing what I do, not only am I making others feel and look beautiful, but I get to take care of my own daughter, spend time with my husband and family. It’s the perfect balance for me and my family.
Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business journey back in 2021 after taking a PMU course. At the time I had just been laid off of my previous job, I got engaged, married, pregnant and had a baby all in the same year; safe to say, I had A LOT going on at the time. I worked throughout my pregnancy, even though I was at high risk. Once I gave birth, I took a month off and was also dealing with postpartum depression. I got back to work, and my business, my lovely clients, the support system I have around me, was amazing. I then took another course for Brow laminations, Tint and Wax and my business started to flourish right after!
I put myself in my clients position whenever I am servicing them, and try to give them the best experience with me every time they step in, not just for their first time. They appreciate how much attention to detail I give to my work and how I always explain the process of every step.
I am proud of myself for being dedicated and never giving up, especially in hard times. I want my clients to know the impact they each have made in my life. I appreciate them for not only trusting me, but referring others, and for sharing so much of their own stories, good and bad. I am proud of the safe space I have created for them.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I mentioned previously, I started my business journey in a time that I had so much going on, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I had my daughter and dealt with postpartum depression, I had to balance my work and personal life. While I felt good taking care of others, I also had to take care of myself and block out days of work to go to therapy. Shortly after having my daughter, I had medical issues that required I have surgery every 3-4 months for 2.5 years, and I wouldn’t give myself not even a week to recover. It took such a toll on my mental health to be dealing with the medical issues, I felt so much guilt and at times defeated. There were times I felt maybe I need to stop working, but I knew if I did, I would feel worse because what I do, my clients, help me recharge and bring me so much joy. Recently, I had two big surgeries, that nearly cost me my life, but at the same time helped me not deal with surgeries every 3-4 months. It has been the most traumatic few years since I have started my business, but also most rewarding; therefore, I will always choose to see the beauty in every struggle or obstacle I face. I’ve remained resilient because of it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t have a super large following, nor do I believe a large following reflects a businesses talent, skill, knowledge or dedication. I think in todays times, many people value someone or their business depending how many followers they have. I also don’t have much patience to be following all the trends; although, they are fun to do and watch! I just post my work and people follow, book appointments and refer others.
My advice for those starting or wanting to build a social media presence would be, just start. We all have to start somewhere. Be authentic in who you are, to yourself and others.
