We were lucky to catch up with Emily C recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Many view success as a peak; the top of the mountain or hard work. In reality, success is ongoing. Success is working two jobs to save the money you need to start a business or buy a home. Success is also juggling a family and work. It isn’t the end of the road; you can be successful all along the road. The forward momentum and growth are success. The only failure is giving up on trying.
It takes hard work, dedication, and persistence to be successful. All of these traits give us drive which propels us forward.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a person of many jobs, I like it that way. Outside of my day job being analytical and organized, I’m a creative. I’m a photographer and also a food blogger. I love to cook and I love to capture moments.
I got into food blogging over 10 years ago when I realized I couldn’t cook to save my life. I started trying out recipes, failing many times along the way. But every time I had a misstep along the way, whether forgetting an ingredient or incorrectly changing proportions, I learned something new. All of this helped me evolve into a confident cook and baker, and now, I’m up for any new dish!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It was important for me to unlearn the idea that people are born good at things. Some people are. But others have to work for it. Gymnasts weren’t born able to do all the flips they can in one performance. They worked hard, practiced, and built both stamina and strength. Being creative isn’t different in that you have to practice and learn and grow to get “good” at it. Photographers have to learn the technical functions of the camera to capture the best photos.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I lost a close family member just before starting the blog. I felt hopeless and grieved for several months. It took me forcing myself to get out – seeing and experiencing things again – before I felt positive. I felt negative emotions for so long that I didn’t know how to cope. By pushing myself, I got out of my funk and learned how to feel good again.
