We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Bullister. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Trends in interior design change constantly and I think the current trends are making a house feel more warm and inviting. One of the biggest trends were seeing currently include moving away from the all white kitchen and keeping everything neutral in home decor. I think adding color throughout the house is a great way to add personality to a space and really make your home specific to you. The all white kitchen can feel cold, and since the kitchen is the heart of a home, adding wood tones or color into this space adds warmth. Another trend were currently seeing is gray walls moving out for more taupe, beige, and brown colors which also makes a home feel warm and inviting.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an interior designer that specializes in virtual design. I truly believe that virtual design is the future of the interior design business because it is such a game changer for my clients to see their specific home with all the changes I recommend before they even purchase a single item. This saves my clients money because they will know how it will look when its finished so returns hardly ever happen, it also saves them time since they can see their whole home designed with all the furniture in a couple weeks. It also gives my clients a plan of how to decorate their home, they can either do it all at once or slowly buy a piece here and there as time and money allows. At E. Bullister Design I strive to give every homeowner I work with a personalized design based on their budget, lifestyle, and style preferences. Unlike big design companies who choose items that give them the best commission, I only chose products that I know will be a good investment for my client. My whole design process is based on how my clients use their home, who they have in it, and how they want the space to feel.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how much my business has grown! When I started E. Bullister Design it was a hobby, and the fact that now we can send our kids to private school and go on vacations just from the money I’ve made is amazing to me! I’ve been so blessed with amazing clients who choose to work with me and tell their friends about me, it really is so humbling that I get to do this as my job!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
One of the most effective ways I’ve found for growing my clientele is social media. I would recommend any new business owner to get on social media and post consistently! Social media is a totally free marketing tool that I feel most small businesses don’t utilize as much as they could. It’s not easy and it does take time but a couple of the things I do is check my insights for my social media pages every week to see what’s working, and what’s not. I also try my hardest to pop on stories and make a personal connection with my followers, I make reels to attract new followers, and I follow social media marketers to give me insight on all the new trends. I’m definetely not a professional at social media, but I can confidently say that having a social media prescence has given me the majority of my clients.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an interior designer is seeing the excitement of the homeowners when I present their new design. I also love getting updates of how the space is coming together. I also love receiving pictures and hearing how having a well designed space has changed their life months and years after working with them! I know interior design is often looked at as an “extra” expense. But I love seeing my client learn how having a well designed home can make your life less chaotic, give you energy, and help you do the things you love to do in your home.
