We recently connected with Emily Boone and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Where to start… I’ve always been risk averse. Quitting jobs or moving on from jobs that were not conducive to my growth tends to be difficult due to my fear of failure. The ‘College Dream’ was instilled, expected, and pursued full send. But… who said I need to be famous to be successful?
After being told I sounded like a dying cow, music as a career path was crossed off the list. I knew from an early age what career or college path I wanted to pursue. At 9 years old, I wrote an autobiography professing with the utmost confidence that I wanted to be an exotic veterinarian, despite acknowledging the difficulty of this particular path.
I worked at a zoo, horse stable, various veterinary hospitals, emergency clinics, and studied abroad at the Tuli Enclave. I graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Biology with a pre-Veterinary focus in the summer of 2020.
Before COVID, I was very active on campus:
- Co-founder of APVMA Club at University of North Georgia (American Pre-Vet Medical Association)
- Alumna of Delta Zeta Sorority, Xi Xi chapter & DZ Ritual Chairman (member of Cabinet) and Ritual Committee Head
- Member of SEEK (Students Encouraging Exceptional Kids), & Bi-annual recitals
One circumstance after another led to me pushing vet school off for years. After my epiphany moment, I played various gigs over the years. By August of 2022, I had officially quit my job as a vet tech supervisor to pursue music full time. I played for 3 years at Frank’s at the Old Mill in Fayetteville, Georgia. Every Tuesday from 6 to 9:30 pm (most often much later as I love to play encores, ha!). They were my foot in the door to gigs in Georgia – Barnesville, Griffin, Senoia, Concord, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Flovilla, Newnan, Warm Springs, Peachtree City, etc.
Whenever I had free time, I gained experience in a plethora of trades (framing, roofing, plumbing, tiling, flooring, sheetrock/painting, etc.) with my partner, Christian Bonilla. I decided to let go of my preconceived notions and expectations and do what I want to do at this very moment because… why not? Now, I’m a tradeswoman and musician! I’ve learned skills beyond the scope of my anticipated or expected career path.
Self-imposed doubt as a mechanism of self-preservation was no longer conducive to my growth as an individual, woman, friend, lover, business partner, etc. Life gives the test first and the lesson afterward. I’ve begun unlearning the indoctrinated belief of sticking to what I know. L’s are not Losses… They’re LESSONS.
The biggest risk I’ve taken is finally living life for myself.
I’M ALLOWED TO CHANGE MY MIND…and change it again :)
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I began piano lessons at the age of 9 with dreams of appearing on America’s Got Talent. Naturally, I started writing songs. However, when I shared one of my favorite compositions with a loved one, I was told that I sounded like a dying cow. That criticism shattered my childhood dream. It was a lot to handle for a 10-year-old girl navigating the complexities of this world.
Fast forward to adulthood, my college friends persuaded me to perform some original songs at an open mic night in downtown Dahlonega. A military veteran approached me about my song, “Insomnia,” with tears in his eyes. He expressed how much he resonated with my experience regarding mental health, and how the song reminded him why he loved music so much. That was my epiphany moment. I realized that my music doesn’t have to be played on the radio 1,000 times to be appreciated. My value and worth cannot be quantified by monetary or societal gain; rather, it lies in my ability to serve as a conduit of positive energy through the power of music.
