We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Anderson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, appreciate you joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
In the dynamic world of photography, where the pursuit of perfection often aligns with the acquisition of the latest and greatest gear, I stand as a proud advocate of three unconventional beliefs that have not only shaped my journey but have become the pillars of success for Emily Elizabeth Photography.
1. Mastery Trumps Machinery: Contrary to popular belief that success is synonymous with an extensive collection of brand-new, high-end equipment, my philosophy is rooted in the belief that the true magic lies not in the gear but in the artist behind the lens. I firmly believe those starting out do not need a plethora of expensive gadgets to create awe-inspiring images. Instead, I’ve found that an intimate understanding of your camera, coupled with a mastery of manual settings and the ability to lead a portrait session, can weave an unforgettable experience for clients. This revelation dawned on me during the early days of my career when financial constraints led me to maximize the potential of the tools I already possessed. The results spoke for themselves, fostering a belief that talent and technique outshine the allure of new gadgets.
2. Beyond Watermarks: In an era dominated by online galleries and instantaneous digital sharing, my second unorthodox conviction challenges the status quo of presentation. I vehemently oppose the practice of tossing watermarked images into the vast sea of online platforms. For me, the true essence of photography is best experienced in its full glory, amplified on a large screen during a personalized presentation. The images, carefully curated to align with the unique desires and needs of each client, are not just snapshots but a narrative unveiled in a cinematic setting. This departure from the virtual to the tangible has not only preserved the enchantment of the photographic journey but has also etched an indelible mark on the hearts of my clients.
3. The Power of Selectivity: Amidst the influx of digital imagery, my third principle champions quality over quantity. It’s a notion that places the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the artist to curate a collection of only the best, meticulously retouched and expertly cropped. I’ve witnessed the overwhelm that clients often experience when bombarded with an excess of images, diluting the impact of each photograph. Hence, I advocate for the elegance of simplicity – a carefully chosen, flawlessly edited selection that speaks volumes. This philosophy has not only streamlined the viewing experience for my clients but has also elevated the perceived value of each image.
In a world where conformity often overshadows individuality, these beliefs have not only defined my path but have become the foundation of Emily Elizabeth Photography. They represent a commitment to craftsmanship, an unwavering dedication to client experience, and a refusal to compromise the artistic integrity that defines my work. It is through these unconventional convictions that I’ve discovered the true essence of my art and the unparalleled joy of sharing it with those who appreciate the magic in every frame.

Emily, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for photography started the moment I was old enough to start snapping pictures. I’ve always been “the girl with the camera” – When I was a kid, I documented everything I possibly could with disposable film cameras before transitioning to polaroid. I got my first digital point and shoot in middle school and eventually started dabbling with film and full-format digital cameras in high school and college.
I’ve always been intrigued with documenting life with photographs but never knew I could make a career out of it until I landed my first professional gig in 2007 as a school portrait photographer. Fast forward to 2011, when my time in the PNW was coming to an end. I was desperate to shake up my life and made the conscious decision to move literally anywhere and not look back.
A few weeks later, I wound up in my hometown, Ventura. A few days after that, I started working for a local photographer as a studio assistant. Together, we hustled and grew her business to new heights. That wild adventure left a lasting impact which gave me invaluable perspective, inspiration, and the real-world experience I needed to branch out on my own to start my own business.
EEP isn’t just about capturing moments; it’s about infusing each session with fun, authenticity, and a whole lot of joy. My style is laid back, bright, fun, quirky sounds, and the uncanny ability to coax a genuine smile out of even the most camera-shy individuals.
What sets me apart? My sessions aren’t about stiff poses and forced smiles; they’re about creating an experience that mirrors the laughter and love within your family. I’m not just a photographer; I’m a storyteller, a friend, and a believer in the power of turning challenges into triumphs. With EEP, you’re not just getting photos; you’re getting an experience, a journey, and a piece of my heart.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation in family photography? Easy – I’ve built it by turning photo sessions into unforgettable experiences. Clients love the fun we have, and that connection shows in the final shots. Top-tier quality in every product is a non-negotiable for me, and I think that commitment stands out. Pouring my all into each session is just how I roll. The result is beautiful portraits that resonate. It’s a two-way street of love between me and my clients, and that’s how I’ve carved out my name in the game.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to make authentic connections within our beautiful community. Being outside and immersing myself in the surroundings enhances my creativity. The joy comes from making people smile, laugh, and even shed a tear through my work. There’s something truly special about capturing moments that can never be recreated – freezing time in a way that resonates emotionally. And perhaps the most fulfilling part is witnessing the growth and changes in my clients over the years, creating a lasting bond through the art we’ve crafted together.
