We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Amburgey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
Before my career, I working in the restaurant/hotel industry from the age of 16 to 24. During that time, I worked many positions in front of house and back of house. I absorbed an immense amount of customer service skills as I navigated through the good and bad situations that each day would bring.
One of the most important lessons I learned was that when you serve the community, you have the power to make a difference in other’s lives. Some people go out to have a drink/eat to unwind from their hectic schedules or stressful jobs. How their experience unfolds can determine a positive or negative shift in their day. I knew that with my business as a hairstylist that this would be exactly the same and I wanted to make a difference.

Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been passionate about hair my whole life. I was fortunate to have an aunt who was a stylist herself and I got to watch her up close as she worked her magic in her craft. I knew one day that is what I was meant to do and I would stop at nothing to get there! Before I was licensed, I would style all my friends and family’s hair for events or even just for fun. Now working behind the chair, I love creating custom dimensional color, lived in low maintenance, grey coverage and textured cuts. I really love to take time to have in depth conversations with clients about their hair needs, goals and concerns before diving into project. This is to ensure we are both on the same page and I have a clear map to navigate to our end goal and make those hair dreams come true.
I am all about healthy hair and am a total product junkie.. currently I’m obsessed with k18 it is MAGIC! My salon uses other clean brands such as unite, leaf & flower, plus more.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media! As tough as it is trying to stay up with posting while running a business and having a life outside of all of that, it truly has been the backbone of my business.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I became licensed in 2019 and immediately started assisting. In between my daily duties I listened to and watched what every stylist was doing and asked questions to expand my knowledge. Then the pandemic hit and unfortunately my learning experience came to an end very early. I did my best to get every ounce of online education I could during that time. After finally going back into salons I began to start working on my own and I took what I had learned and applied it to real life. I I spent as much time as I could promoting myself on social media, taking pictures, educating clients and over time I built a following. PERSISTENCE IS KEY! If you put in the effort you will be rewarded.
