We recently connected with Emily Agan and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Turn around time for a website can take up to six months. Honestly, my clients don’t have time for this long grueling process. Getting online and ahead of the competition is an ASAP ordeal. That’s why I offer website and branding services from start to finish in 2-4 weeks – live and online automagically.
This process isn’t for everyone, but for those who like “full speed ahead,” my business is just right. Clients can even opt for done-in-a-day services at a flat rate – where we knock out a full list of website to-dos.
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began Emily Agan Studio in early 2020 – after being furloughed, breaking my foot, and, well, you know, during a pandemic. I had plenty of time to obsess over something, so I took a few online courses to redirect my energy and make the most of it.
I had done random design jobs all my life and thought an online business designing websites would be spot on with my skill set. So, I signed up for a couple of Squarespace courses.
I knocked them out like a box of cinnamon toast crunch in a couple of caffeinated weekends and was ready to shift my career and life goals almost overnight.
While I did go back to my job for the summer – I ended up quitting later that year, going full-time and moving to Texas with my husband.
My little business grew with blood, sweat, and virtual tears.
I now provide 1:1 web, branding, and done-in-a-day services for coaches, creatives, and online service-based industries. Small online companies barely have time (or money) to figure out the design side of things. I take this part off their plate in a couldn’t-be-simpler process – from stuck and overwhelmed to, “OMG, now I can actually get stuff done in my business!”
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Two years into my business, the generation of clients is from word-of-mouth referrals – a friend of a friend, someone at the gym, a social media connection, or a past client’s happy testimonial. In a 1:1 service situation, referrals are golden.
I milk the referral cow for all its worth by asking for testimonials and feedback, providing a share-worthy experience, and adding in little “extras” that clients can’t help but remember.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I’ve noticed a steady uptick in my blog conversion for new clients. One of my articles far outshines the others, and it’s a post aimed at therapists and counselors in the online space. I’ve booked several “Googlers” simply because they were looking for answers, and I provided the right solutions.
