Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emily , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I realized I was naturally talented when it came to business and leadership. It was something that I could talk about for hours and I enjoyed doing it. Whether I was working my 9 to 5 job or helping my friends start their business I enjoyed business, solving problems and anything to do with leadership. It lit a fire in me that I couldn’t explain.
In my automotive career I experienced a lot of bad leadership. I had leaders that refused to help me grow and I also saw a lot of loss revenue due to bad leadership, broken processes and the lack of proper gap analysis. This led me to come up with the concept of business consulting to solve these issues where you start at the leadership and then focus on the other areas of the business.
I had a moment of realization in one of my roles where I saw they hired a group of consultants to come in and solve one of the issues we had going on in the company. When I saw what we paid them and what they delivered I was shocked that they were paid the amount they were and what they provided as a result. There was no focus on the leadership team and the problem solving tools within the company. What the consulting company provided was something I was already doing on a daily basis the only difference was I wasn’t getting paid the amount the consulting company was. This experience opened my eyes up to a whole new world and that is when I knew the direction I wanted to go in.
I knew if I offered a service that would focus on developing leaders and give them tools and resources this would overall impact the company’s revenue and culture and it would be a win for all those involved in the process. I was excited to start this idea since very few companies offer this type of approach.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into business consulting because I saw there was a lack of leadership development in organizations. I also realized very few companies understood true problem solving, gap analysis and business planning and growth. This is why I decided to create a service where I provide leadership development, gap analysis and business planning and growth to companies that are looking to reduce cost, increase revenue and develop their leaders.
I have the knowledge and experience of what it takes to be a leader through challenging times to be able to overcome the obstacles, cut cost, reduce waste and still lead a team. I know what it is like to struggle with no direction as a leader and not have the tools and resources to figure things out.
I am proud of all my clients who put in the work, took the direction that I provided and got the transformation they desired. I am also proud of myself for taking the leap of faith and trusting in my own abilities to have my own company and live a life full of purpose.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My entire life has been a journey of building up resilience. When I made the decision to leave the Amish culture at seventeen and leave behind everything I had ever known I had no idea the amount of resilience that I would develop in the years to come. I left with an eighth grade education, got pregnant at eighteen and then again at twenty. I was in an abusive marriage so I filed for divorce and made the decision I would go to college while working fulltime and being a single mom. Four years I graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational, Leadership and Supervision. This was not an easy path and there were many moments I wanted to stop but yet I continued on.(I share more of my story in my book “From Choice To Change”. ) This is were I learned resilience and it continues to be something I grow more in as I am building my business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The one lesson I had to unlearn was that I am capable of doing amazing and big things. Being born and raised in the Amish culture I was conditioned to not be to much, to be quiet, not cause any issues and I was told what I had to do every step of my life. I had to unlearn this pattern as I grew my business and allow myself to be my true authentic self, to embrace all that I am and trust myself that I could do big and amazing things in my life including being a business owner.
