Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emilio Gonzalez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Emilio, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to what I do best by watching those that inspire me. Ever since I was around 8 years old, I feel in love with jazz and crooners. I started to sing songs from the ink spots and the rat pack, because I was fascinated by the sound and the feeling it gave me and I wanted to share to the world as much as they did. Learning guitar was a similar process. Seeing Joni Mitchell explore tunings and create chords just out of pure sound and feeling. I started covering her music, then the next thing you know my style of music was fusing with hers. Creating this folky jazzy like style to my music.
School has always been an obstacle in my life. Especially starting college as a bio medical student at the University of South Florida in Saint Petersburg. Although I was studying a topic such as biology, I always managed to find time to perform at open mics and other music events around Saint Petersburg Florida. After a year of biology, I applied to Berklee and got accepted. I am now finishing up my last semester here at Berklee, with a degree in Professional music and a minor in music production for artist
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Emilio Gonzalez, I am a singer-songwriter from Tampa Florida. I’ve always had a tough time figuring out what kind of music I make, I always enjoy branching out and making something different. Some say I have a music style of a jazz/folk artist, which makes sense. I’ve had a love for jazz crooners back in the 50s and folk artist like Joni Mitchell or Nick Drake that were in the 70s. I’d say my music will always change, for there’s so many different styles I’d like to venture out and try.
I started writing my own music one I started college at the age of 17. I knew music was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I performed and wrote a song every week in hopes to build my stage presence and writing style. Seeing where I am now, I’m proud of the work and dedication I have put in for my music and can definitely say I’m in a space where I’m familiar with how I create.
Words have such power in music, being able to tell a story or portray an emotion has been so therapeutic for me. Anytime a fan reaches out to me to tell me how much my words mean to them, let’s me know I’m not alone when feeling a type of way. there are many people going through tough times in their life and knowing my music can help ease the stress, is what keeps me going.
You can find most of my music under my name Emilio Gonzalez. I have an EP called “I’’m Myself” coming out November 10th 2023.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing how much my music speaks to people. I love to write and knowing that my music can release to others, or help Other sin anyway possible is what keeps me going.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Touring has always been on my mind since I started writing my own music. I find it fascinating how I can travel the world and share my story with the people I meet along the way. There’s so much I have yet to discover and my goal is to one day tour the world and find out what I’ve been missing and what else I have yet to learn.
