We recently connected with Emilie Sobel and have shared our conversation below.
Emilie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
I measure success on so many things. First off, success shouldn’t be only about how much money you’re making. I feel truly successful when I have the opportunity to work with clients, brands and people that I not only look up to but am an actual fan and consumer of. For me, nothing feels better than getting noticed by someone you admire and then getting hired by them to work together on a campaign or project. The fact that businesses put their trust in me to create captivating social media campaigns and strategies is what makes me feel like I’m doing this whole work thing right and that my business is successful. I determine my success by my long term clients and relationships, my reputation as a hard working, trust worthy and reliable business that can help launch brands to the next level of their own success. Success to me is when everyone wins and we can all continue to make more money, get bigger and better and continue to be happy and content with the work we’ve done.
Emilie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Emilie Sobel and I am a Content Creator and the Founder of Emilie Sobel Media, Inc. I am based out of Miami Beach where I was born and raised. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BFA in Fashion Marketing, which is where I started my blog back in the day – before Instagram. As a content creator, I focus on sharing all things lifestyle, beauty and travel and treat it as a diary of my life and showcase who I am as a person and what I love as a real consumer. My social media presence has opened up many doors and has ultimately lead me to starting my own agency almost 3 years ago. At Emilie Sobel Media, I work with clients on developing and executing their Social Media marketing campaigns, Influencer marketing strategies, events and a ton of consulting. My clients range from beauty brands to consumer products and services. I am most proud of building a business for myself before the age of 30 and my continued growth and success. My dream was to always work for myself, so every day I am grateful that I have the privilege and opportunity to do so. When brands and clients work with me, they get 110%. I pride myself on being very transparent, hands on and positive and only collaborate with companies that align with who I am and what my values are. This helps me do my job the best I can and it shows.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is no particular goal that is driving my creative journey, however, my mission in everything – not just work, is to be happy, independent and free to say yes to any and every opportunity. I work hard so that I can travel the world, take time off and live the life I want in Miami Beach and beyond. The fact that I’m able to work from basically anywhere in the world helps, but having Miami be my home base with so many wonderful clients and opportunities is something I appreciate each and every single day and that is what pushes me to keep going. The fact that I am able to be selective with who I work with nowadays makes me feel proud of what I’ve accomplished and excited for what’s to come.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Timing has a lot to do with my success on social media. I was a Sophomore at SCAD when Instagram came out and had just started my fashion blog, Soul in Stilettos. The summer of my Sophomore year, I went to intern at Seventeen Magazine in NYC and was featured on their Instagram a few times through out my time working there. I must have gained 5000+ followers from those posts, because those were the days when it was easier to grow your following. Once that happened, I started to realize that I loved social media and wanted to pursue it as an actual career. After graduating school, I went on to work at a Social Media Agency for 6 years before starting my own. Because I was online from the very beginning, that gave me the boost and knowledge I needed to continue this career almost 12 years later. For those starting to build their social media presence, stay consistent and stay original. Ask yourself what you love to see on social media, what you don’t see on social media and what you can offer social media that no one else is offering. The Influencer space is filled with creators wanted free things and experiences, which I get, but that’s never the right reason to get into this. Figure out why you’re actually getting involved with social media and try to fill a gap that has yet to be filled by others. Stay true to yourself and do your own thing instead of copying what other people are doing and following trends. Trust me, it will pay off.
