We recently connected with Emilie Gosselin and have shared our conversation below.
Emilie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Yes, I have failed in my art several times, but one of my biggest failures stretched over about a year. In the field of the arts, inspiration is a daily challenge. Sometimes we experience blocks that last several days, during which we feel powerless. Other times, it’s at the technical level of execution that we find ourselves lacking.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Émilie Gosselin, and I have been a professional painter for 4 years. I make a living from my art, and my journey has been marked by highs and lows. I am proud to have overcome my lack of confidence to reveal what lies within me: painting. My creations emerge from my subconscious, and I am touched to see that people resonate with them.
My style is a hybrid mix of expressionist abstract and pop art, along with portraits that capture deep emotions. In just 4 years, I have managed to establish myself in a field where it is difficult to break through, as the market is limited. However, every moment of doubt or lack of inspiration impacts my sales, reminding me of the importance of perseverance. What I want my clients and followers to remember is that each piece I create is a part of me, an invitation to explore emotions and stories, and I am here to share this passion with them.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In the past year, I had a commission to complete a family portrait with three faces. I had to start over four times because my clients were not satisfied with the result, and it was extremely difficult for my artistic self-esteem. Why did it take a year? I had to take a break because I felt incapable of succeeding. Sometimes, certain faces are more challenging to capture than others, depending on the features, etc. I felt inadequate. Eventually, I managed to complete it, and I am grateful to my clients for their patience and belief in me, as I almost gave up. It was them who encouraged me to try again.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for me comes from social media. Often, people follow me for a long time, see my overall vibe, and then connect with my personality in addition to my art, which leads to a sale. I also attend in-person events where I meet people and hand out a lot of business cards, but I also connect with other artists. I love to connect and meet other artists to exchange ideas about our practices, our successes, and our failures.
