Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emilia Drago. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Emilia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I believe my parents made a good choice in giving me the right to chose. Both my parents were dancers, and instead of forcing my brother and I into that path, they gave us the chance to chose. I followed in their footsteps until I discovered acting, and they’ve been supportive at every step. They let me follow my own path when I chose not to go to college, and when I chose to take the film acting route. I was never forced into any school, club, or decision, and I am thankful every day for the right to chose and the support from my family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Emilia Drago and I’m and artist and creative here in Miami. I was a born and raised dancer and theatre kid, until I decided to take the film acting and choreography route as I grew into an adult.
As an actor, you have to be well rounded. Luckily I have a strong dance and theatre background, and I believe that adds an extra level to my performances on-screen. I use all the skills I’ve learned from my previous training to become a very flexible, hard working, determined, disciplined, and amicable actor.
Choreography wise, I have been choreographing and teaching for 7 years, and have created musical and competition pieces at numerous schools around Miami such as Miami Arts Charter, Miami Arts Studio, TAME Dance Academy, and Lourdes Academy. I teach all styles of dance and musical theatre to ages 3-18. I am most proud of my students and being able to not only give them dance steps, but to be able to instill some form of knowledge of dance, and things for them to take with them as they move forward in and out of this profession.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when others view your project for the first time and have a genuine reaction to what’s happening in front of them.
To us, we are desensitized to what we see because we know what happens, and we’ve done it a thousand times. It’s always hard to watch yourself as a performer. But I get a thrill out of hearing and watching the reactions of family and friends as they view my projects for the first time.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My go to motto is “do it for the plot”. What I mean by that is I want to try everything at least once. It helps me assess what I want, and gives me a cool story to tell along the way.
Eventually I would love to make it to a big movie or TV series, and after that maybe find a place as a creator of a show, or be a person who directs or produces. I really truly want to live and try it all.
