We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emilee Guerrero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emilee below.
Alright, Emilee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Before I started my business, I attempted making candles for myself and a few family members. I learned most of what I know from YouTube and other candle makers who decided to share their journey along with their do’s and dont’s. After trial and error, I finally had made a decent candle that burned safely and correctly. It didn’t take me long to perfect my craft to be honest. I make sure I always make “testers”. Meaning I create a candle with the intent of testing the fragrance load and wick size. This is done for each scent I create to make sure I choose a scent that isn’t overbearing and that burns at the right speed with a decent size flame.
The most essential skill is patience. Every candle maker needs patience. Patience to let a candle burn several hours at a time to complete your testing phase. Once you’ve mastered that, there is nothing stopping you.
I believe an obstacle that I still face to this day is having a full time job while also trying to run my business. I balance it in the best way I can which has worked out great but it is definitely something that stands in the way of applying more time to Lublu and learning more.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Emilee. I started Lublu around the age of 24 as a way to be creative. It has been something I enjoy working on for the past 4+ years. What got me interested in candles was one question. “What is in the candle I’m burning?” That one question had me curious and led me to wanting to create clean burning products that people can enjoy while knowing the product they are breathing in was safe to do so. I started by creating candles for myself and loved ones. But in the back of my mind I always wanted something to call my own so I asked myself “What if I make this into a business?” This question led me to creating a cute and fun logo, a business name, designing my own website and much more. I learned a lot from Youtube, other candle makers who decided to share their journey, and Candle Science. Candle Science is one of my suppliers; not only are they active on social media but they are loaded with tons of candle making information. I was so grateful to have found them and learn so much from them.
Once Lublu was up and running, the candle making led to making wax melts, and special products like engraved wick trimmers, match vials, pop sockets and key chains. I believe these special products set me apart from other candle making businesses as not many decide to branch out and create merchandise with their business name/logo. I decided to have some fun with Lublu and share what I thought people would like. Furthermore, the candle names. I have so much fun creating the funny candle names. I create seasonal scents. Meaning each Lublu candle you smell, you will not find else where. I mix fragrances to call my own. One of my personal favorites is called “Santa’s Favorite Ho”. It has scent notes of cocoa butter and marshmallow. My absolute favorite to burn in any room and doesn’t fail in catching peoples attention once they smell it,
Lublu has grown to where now I get custom orders. I have created candle orders for baby showers, birthday parties and even wedding favors. It fills my heart with joy knowing people trust me to create a product they will love and want to share with others. I am very proud of where Lublu is at this moment and I cannot wait to see what else is store for the future.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing the smile on people’s faces when they like what I’ve created. I do vendor events and during these events, people come and shop in person. It is so rewarding to hear a customer laugh at the names I have selected and hearing “OMG that smells amazing”. Not only does it make me happy but it makes me feel like all the time and effort I put into making that one product is worth it because it is something they will genuinely enjoy.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
This is something I believe I struggle with daily. I can be very active on social media and then there are times I take a break but am working on something new for Lublu and forget to post it. In my personal life, I do not post a lot. So it is difficult for me to remember to share my story with my audience because it is still not something I am used to. One tip I can give anyone is, “Post it”. Post it all. Post the process of your creative journey, the behind the scenes, the final product and everything in between. The audience wants to relate to you, get to know you and that is what sells your product. The times I get active on social media, show my face and send emails out, that is when I get good traction on my site and profiles. One more thing is word of mouth, I was blessed enough to to have my friends and family support me from day 1. They repost me, recommend me and never fail to show up to my events. I can truly say I wouldn’t be where I am without their constant support.
