We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emilee Burlett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emilee, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes, I take vacations, and I truly believe in them. As a business owner, it’s easy to feel like you can’t step away, but rest is productive. It renews your energy, fuels creativity, and gives you clarity.
I’ve always been someone who values places over things. There’s nothing better than experiencing a sunrise or sunset in a new location. Sometimes my vacations even include a few fun sessions, because who doesn’t love capturing moments in beautiful places?
Planning ahead is everything. I schedule around time off, communicate early with clients, and automate what I can. I try to be fully present with the people I love.
If you’re a business owner who feels like you can’t step away, you absolutely can. Your business should support your life, not run it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m Emilee, a photographer, storyteller, and creative based in West Virginia. I specialize in weddings, family milestones, and branding sessions, and I’ve been capturing life through my lens for over a decade now.
Photography found me in a very natural way. I’ve always been drawn to preserving memories…whether through old photographs, home videos, or handwritten notes. After becoming a mom, that passion only deepened. I wanted to freeze time, not just for my own family, but for others too. That’s when I began turning this love into a business rooted in connection, creativity, and storytelling.
Today, I photograph everything from wedding days to maternity and newborn sessions, milestone moments, and personal branding work. My goal is to make people feel truly seen in front of the camera. Whether you’re walking down the aisle or celebrating a growing business, I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and like the most authentic version of yourself.
What sets me apart is the genuine relationships I build with my clients. Many of the families I photograph return year after year, and watching their stories unfold is one of the greatest honors of my work. I’m not just showing up with a camera. I’m showing up with heart. I want your photos to hold emotion and meaning. I want them to take you back to that exact moment in time.
What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me. From engagements and weddings to babies and beyond, I have been invited into some of the most meaningful chapters of people’s lives. That’s not something I take lightly.
More than anything, I want my work to feel like home. Honest, warm, and full of love. Something that reminds you of what matters most.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What’s helped build my reputation most is the experience I create for my clients from start to finish. I care deeply about the people I photograph, and I think that shows in the way I communicate, the way I shoot, and the way I deliver images that feel personal and timeless. Word of mouth has been huge for me…when clients feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for, they share their experience with others. Over the years, I’ve built lasting relationships and photographed families and couples through multiple seasons of life. That trust and consistency have been the foundation of my business.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I focus on staying consistent with how I show up… both online and in person. I share not just my work, but the heart behind it. Whether it’s through Instagram, blog posts, or client emails, I try to make my presence feel warm, personal, and true to who I am.
Another key piece has been investing in the client experience… from the first inquiry to the final gallery delivery. People remember how you made them feel, and many of my clients become repeat clients, and that long-term trust has helped grow my business more than anything else.
