We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emiko Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emiko, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
This year I gained my biggest following on social to date. I went from less than 100 followers to over 50k+ in less than 2 weeks with over 4 million combined views within a month. I currently run my own profile which is actually more difficult than I thought it would be. I’m intentional about responding to every kind comment regardless if there are thousands. With taking time to read comments, I also have to see a lot of mean ones and that can sometimes take a toll especially when you block people and they make new pages. Overall I am grateful for the platform I was able to build and I can’t wait until God blesses me with a team so I can focus more on the creative aspect of my page.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Keysha and I write books under the pseudonym Emiko Love. After 2 years of research, trial & error, and just life life-ing as I like to call it, I self published my first book The Commandments of Womanhood. The Commandments of Womanhood is a series created to uplift women to tap into the highest version of themselves. From self love to fixing your credit, The Commandments of Womanhood is something that every woman needs in their purse to remind them of their greatness. So far there has been 3 limited editions released and I have also self published a poetry collection(Magik,Interrupted). Writing has always been something I did well so it was only a matter of time that I start publishing books. I can’t even be put into a box as only a writer because I have a background in so many creative avenues. This year my TikTok started growing because of my honest and sometimes humorous rants. I’ve been creating content online since I was about 18, so even though the followers are finally coming I want people to know that if they don’t give up eventually their hard work will pay off. Almost 11 years later and I’m just now starting to gain a larger following. I want people to know it’s okay to pivot and try new things, but don’t let the microwave stories discourage you from playing the long game even when there is no one clapping for you. The slow cooked success may look like you became an overnight sensation to those who aren’t familiar with your journey. Be honest about the journey so you can help those who come behind you.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been intentional on the type of content I’ve put out for years, but it wasn’t until this year when I stopped worrying about numbers that my page grew out of nowhere. When it’s your time it’s your time. You don’t need a co-sign when you start focusing on just having fun and being yourself. I’ve had many friends post me over the years who had huge followings just off love. I got the most followers this year when it was just me and God. I would make silly videos or random videos in between working my job then out of nowhere my posts just started taking off. There’s a million marketing videos and techniques, but what I’ve learned is there’s no better marketing than being authentic. Don’t be afraid to stand out and just do what you like versus what you think will make people gravitate towards you. If you like what you post, people will have no choice but to like it too! You are the trend so stop trying to fit in.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve always had a great personality, but I used to reserve it for those close to me. I went from photography/videography to clothing then from clothing designing to writing. Regardless of my talents, nothing has grew my social media quicker than my personality. I never wanted to be in the front, but God doesn’t design his chosen people to hide in the background. Once I stood in my power, it became contagious and I had to pivot from hiding behind the scenes to being in front of the camera.
