We were lucky to catch up with Emelissa Ramos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Emelissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Like most, I struggled with my weight most of my life and was obsessed with being “skinny”. I went through extreme calorie restriction , over exercising, and feeling completely lost. I did not have a healthy relationship with food or exercise. Going to extremes was always my way. Once I would lose weight I would gain it all back because extremes are NEVER sustainable. Once I started to weight lift , discovered macro counting, and the importance of flexibility, my body and mind completely changed for the better. I realized I could actually eat food I enjoyed and eat more of it than I ever thought was possible while losing weight, gaining muscle, gaining flexibility, and feeling good in my skin. With my new found confidence and belief in my self I decided to branch out on my own and start my own health and fitness business . I am a stretch therapist working to help my clients gain flexibility, mobility, and help their overall quality of life.I am also a NASM certified personal trainer and certified macro nutrition coach. My mission is to really help my clients understand not only the importance of weight lifting but also nutrition and flexibility combined. I really want to help educate my clients so that they can live a healthy sustainable lifestyle. I had to learn the hard way and make many mistakes so my clients don’t have to. This is my passion and something I truly love
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As someone who really struggled with not only my weight but my self confidence most of my life I always found exercise as something that made me happy. I struggled with going to extremes with my weight , losing it just to gain it back because nothing I did was sustainable. One year I had gained 60 pounds due to stress from a job I was miserable at, binge eating, and binge drinking. I was extremely depressed, lost, and just so unhappy in my own skin. Something in me clicked one day and I decided to do something about it. I was sick and tired of my own excuses. I started to focus on my nutrition, cut out alcohol, stepped into the gym for the first time and started weight lifting. I fell in love with the changes my body started to make.and how good I started to feel. I decided to purchase a personal training package from NASM to become a personal trainer. I felt like It was something I really felt a passion for and wanted to educate myself so I could help other people that felt the helplessness that I felt. I didn’t end up getting certified until 3 years later and added on to that by getting certified as a macro nutrition coach, I never hired a coach and lost all the weight on my own and earned so much by my own trial and error. Really learning what works and what doesn’t by my own trial and error.. I started to work for a company that certified me as a stretch therapist but ended up leaving after a year so I could start my own business. I learned so much about the human body and how important flexibility and mobility is for our bodies longevity. I now have my own health and fitness business called “Health Goals with Emy” I am not only a PT , Macro nutrition coach, but also a stretch therapist doing assisted stretching. What really sets me apart from other fitness professionals is the fact that I can relate to the struggle that others are going through. I know what it is to know nothing, feel lost, and desperate for change. I have struggled, so I know the struggle. I know what it takes mentally to get to a better place and how hard it is. Relatability is what I have that most people don’t. I am extremely proud of what I have accomplished business wise and personally. I’m proud of how far I have come physically and mentally because it was not easy. I am beyond blessed to help my clients feel their best
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn stopping because of fear. For so many years I let fear stop me from doing so many things. Being scared and uncomfortable is so important. That is where growth happens. Sometimes you gotta bet on yourself. I have grown so much in the past 3 years because I took the scary uncomfortable way instead of the easy way.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The first 6 months of starting my own business I wasn’t gaining clients. I was regretting leaving my job, I was scared, I was sad, and really felt defeated. I decided to start advertising complimentary stretches to get people in the door and let them see what I do. From there I gained clients and really started to see an increase in numbers. Sometimes you have to pivot and do something that will draw attention to your business even if in the moment it doesn’t bring a profit.
