We recently connected with Emanuel Galimidi and have shared our conversation below.
Emanuel , appreciate you joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I have a bit of a hybrid model. I select my own topics but do not use any prepared scripts. I do however, have a great company that helps with the filming, editing and distribution. It’s the right amount of delegation for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After defending some of the world’s largest corporations in most every type of accident case for 15+ years I realized that while I was enjoying who I was working with (team, select clients), it wasnt what I wanted to do for the balance of my professional life. Now, I didn’t immediately act on that thought, grab a gold fish and ask “who’s coming with me?!” a la Jerry Maguire. Although that would have made for a more compelling story. I sat with it for a while before even deciding to make a decision (like any good lawyer). However, when that lightbulb went off (thanks to a close friend) I began to imagine what that the world would look like if switched sides and only represented those who had been injured and their families. Once that idea crystalized, there was no turning back. I then began to plan. I collected information, saved up money given that I was starting with about as many clients I had passport stamps to Mars. After I felt was “ready enough” (no such thing as fully ready), I jumped and figured out the rest.
One of the big drivers every day for me is to help client’s solve problems. That’s what I enjoy most about personal injury law. The client has been injured by someone else. They now need assistance in getting back on their feet and moving forward with their lives. That’s where I come in.
There are lots of great personal injury attorneys around the country. What sets my firm apart is the specific experience I have when dealing with defense attorneys and their carrier clients. Make no mistake, nearly every time you see a company represented in an accident case by a lawyer, that lawyer has a three party relationship, not a one on one with the defendant company/driver. It’s the insurance company paying the bills in those situations and in nearly all, calling the shots. I have years of experience at all levels of the insurance industry. From the field level adjuster who handles the intake of a new claim to sitting with the heads of these massive insurance companies and advising them on cases worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
One of the things that I am most proud of is the client experience. At my firm, you speak with a lawyer. You will not get bounced around different departments until they’ve worn you out. In other words, my firm doesn’t operate like an insurance company fighting you for compensation. Delaying your case at every turn.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Let your team lead. Ask them for input and if it’s a better idea than yours (it often is!) implement it. Dont add your flair or “finishing touch”. Put your ego away. That’s the least valuable part of your business (not zero, but still least valuable).
That is how you build ownership with your team.
Remember that in a wheel, every spoke leads the way forward at some point.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Listening is far more important than speaking.
Here’s what I mean by that.
Many years ago, I was a young lawyer involved in a complicated construction defect case (most of these cases are). Lots of lawyers, lots of talking, LOTS of ego (me included!). During every conference call or in person meeting nearly everyone waited their turn to speak. Lots to say. Many many positions to assert, etc. etc., I say nearly because there was one lawyer, representing possibly the most important party in the case, who barely said a word. Seemed like he wasn’t even there most of the time. This guy clearly didn’t know what he was doing! Wrong. He did the most listening and ultimately navigated the case out from the swamp we were in, and a great result for his client. The lesson here was easy.
Zip it, unless it’s meaningful.
