We recently connected with Ema Poi and have shared our conversation below.
Ema, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media. As a small business owner in the growth phase, hiring a dedicated social media manager isn’t what we’re ready for right now. Managing it myself has been both rewarding and challenging. The biggest hurdle is figuring out how to consistently grow my audience. Trends evolve so quickly—keeping up with which audio is popular or what type of content resonates with my audience can feel like a full-time job in itself.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that authenticity matters. While chasing trends is tempting, the content that feels true to my brand tends to perform better in the long run. Also, engaging with your audience genuinely—not just posting and disappearing—builds a stronger community. Another insight is that consistency is key. Even when growth feels slow (and it certainly feels slow at times), staying visible and present helps maintain momentum.
For other business owners, I’d say: start where you are with what you have. You don’t need a huge budget to create meaningful content. Experiment, track what works, and don’t be afraid to adjust your approach. Social media can feel overwhelming, but it’s also a powerful tool to connect with your audience personally.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Ema Poi, and I’m the founder of Emaculate Conceptions Enterprise, an event planning company dedicated to crafting unforgettable experiences. My journey into this industry started organically over two decades ago. I began planning baby showers, bridal showers, and milestone birthdays for friends and family in 2002. What started as a passion for bringing people together soon evolved into a full-fledged business.
By 2015, I was planning traditional Nigerian weddings, church ceremonies, and large-scale receptions, sometimes for up to 700 guests. In 2021, I even traveled internationally to Nigeria to manage weddings and traditional marriages firsthand. In 2022, I officially established Emaculate Conceptions socially, and since then, I’ve been attending networking events, private showings, and open houses to grow the business.
Emaculate Conceptions specializes in various events, from intimate gatherings like baby showers and engagement parties to grand-scale weddings and corporate functions. We offer tailored packages to fit every need—from basic consultations and day-of coordination to full-service planning, including vendor management, custom décor, and entertainment. Whether it’s a small birthday party for 50 guests or a wedding with hundreds in attendance, we approach each event with the same meticulous attention to detail and creative vision.
What sets us apart is our dedication to exceeding expectations. We don’t just plan events—we craft experiences that reflect our clients’ personalities and stories. My background in customer experience management gives us a unique edge; I understand the importance of every touchpoint and how those little details contribute to a seamless, memorable event. We’re not just here to meet a checklist; We’re here to ensure that every guest walks away feeling like they were part of something special.
I’m most proud of my ability to balance creativity with organization. Planning large events can be overwhelming, but my passion for structure and detail ensures everything runs smoothly from concept to execution. One standout moment was when I successfully planned a Nigerian traditional wedding, church wedding, and reception—all in the same weekend. They were 16-hour days, after planning for a year, but seeing the joy on my clients’ and guests’ faces made every moment worth it.
For potential clients and followers, I want you to know that Emaculate Conceptions isn’t just about event planning—it’s about creating lasting memories. Our slogan, “Eminence Envisioned. Creatively Crafted,” reflects our commitment to bringing each client’s vision to life elegantly and precisely. If you’re looking for a planner deeply invested in your event’s success and thrives on transforming ideas into reality, I’m here to make that happen!
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
Yes, I previously co-owned a business called BE ENTERPRISE, which I started in 2009 with a business partner. We specialized in selling luxury fragrances, and the business was quite lucrative during the first couple of years. However, as time passed, it became clear that the profits weren’t enough to sustain us long-term. Eventually, I made the decision to sell my share of the business to my partner.
One of the biggest lessons I took from that experience is the importance of adaptability. What works in the early stages of a business may not be enough to carry it forward indefinitely. Markets shift, customer preferences evolve, and if you’re not proactive in adjusting your business model or diversifying your offerings, it can be challenging to maintain momentum.
Another key insight is the value of clear agreements and open communication when entering a partnership. While it’s easy to focus on the excitement of starting something new, it’s equally important to have honest conversations about long-term goals, expectations, and exit strategies. Selling the business was smooth because we had mutual respect and a clear understanding of each other’s roles and contributions.
For entrepreneurs hoping to sell their businesses one day, I’d advise building something that can stand independently—something that isn’t entirely dependent on you as the owner. This makes the business more attractive to potential buyers and ensures a smoother transition. Also, know when it’s time to let go. Sometimes, stepping away from a business that no longer aligns with your goals can open the door to new and even more fulfilling opportunities.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been a combination of word of mouth, family, and church connections. There’s nothing more powerful than a personal recommendation, and I’ve been fortunate to have a strong network that trusts and supports my work. These referrals have been invaluable in building my reputation and securing consistent business, especially in the early stages.
That said, we’re actively building our social media presence to expand beyond our immediate circles. Social media offers an incredible opportunity to reach people with whom we’d never cross paths otherwise. It’s about increasing exposure, showcasing our work, and connecting with potential clients who resonate with our brand’s style and values. The goal is to balance nurturing personal connections and leveraging digital platforms to further grow our audience and client base.
