We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ely Yancey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ely thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We recently released our second EP, titled “SON.”. This EP is a culmination of the work we have put in the last three years being a band, with all of the songs being meticulously picked apart and worked through by every member of the band. The first song written on the EP, titled “HERE TO STAY.” was originally written by myself in the Fall of 2021, and from there we continued to write more music together. “MENTAL GOODBYES.” is a particularly special song on this EP, as it is a song written by Garrett Dayton involving the death of his father, and his process of grief. We view this EP as a true representation of our sound, and couldn’t be more proud of it. We are touring to promote this new EP next month (June 0f 2023). Our very own Jackson Yancey, main vocalist, has produced all of our music including this recent EP, and we are forever grateful to have such an incredible engineer and producer in our band.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Every member of the band has grown up playing music, and we all started playing in bands in high school (except our vocalist Jackson, Felspar is his first band). Brayden, Jackson, and Ely all grew up on the same street, and decided to start a heavy project during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recorded a demo, decided we wanted a clean vocalist and still needed a bassist, so Garrett was asked to join the band. Since then, we have released 9 songs and have played shows across North Carolina, with plans to tour the east coast in June of 2023.
How did you build your audience on social media?
We try not to take any aspect of our band too seriously, and social media is a good reflection of that. Many bands try to be super serious, treating their band as a business, and while that has its place we feel that it sucks the fun out of it. We have found our most successful social media posts to be ones that we throw memes into, or make humorous in some way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We all really love playing live, and that seems to be the most rewarding part of the process for all of us. Playing in a metalcore band means that crowd participation is really important, and we aim to deliver the most chaotic live shows that we can give. Our reputation has lived up to that, and a solid majority of our fanbase comes to our shows to mosh, get wild, and enjoy the music.
