We were lucky to catch up with Elliott Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Elliott, appreciate you joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
I feel that a lot of people in my industry and in life feel that competition determines your success.
Elliott, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Elliott Harris and I am a music producer focused in the areas of Hip-Hop and R&B. I have always loved music, but I began to work in the industry as an engineering intern in the early 2000’s. I was brought in to ease the load of the main engineer so that he could focus more on production and other areas of his career, but I quickly learned that I desired to work in the realm of production as well. The internship piqued my interest and I began to hone my skills from that moment going forward
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Initially, I was under the impression that competition is the most important part of being successful in music and in life in general. There is definitely a competitive component, but I choose to focus my competition inwards rather that with other producers. To explain in more detail, I compete with myself daily to be the best version that I can possibly be. My main ambition is to be better than I was the previous day in each individual area of my life. I have learned that this approach alleviates stress and keeps one’s progress at the forefront of their daily activities.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
At one point in my life, my main source of income was in the field of education. I worked as a teacher daily, while only creating music in my spare time. My journey in music began previous to my life in education, but had to be put aside for a time due to unforeseen circumstances. With this being said, my love of music never declined and working in education never equaled my desire for success in the former. After 8 years in education, I decided that it was time to pursue my dreams full-time and I have been doing so ever since.
