We recently connected with Ellen Kantro and have shared our conversation below.
Ellen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Perseverance and a diverse skill set are part of being successful as an artist – as well as in many fields.
Artists need not only create, but be all things to their small business including marketing, sales, website maintenance, social media, shipping, inventory management, client communications and a host of other aspects of getting their work seen by collectors.
In my experience, early frustration often leads to the abandonment of the pursuit of creating art. It is important to keep painting – because with every attempt comes discovery of new techniques and the development of an individual’s “voice”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My work has evolved considerably over the years – shifting to different mediums and color palettes. My paintings originate from my work in marquetry, which is inlaid veneers. Once I began incorporating paint into those pieces, the woodworking became less of a feature and I began to focus primarily on paint and paper.
I try to create pieces that have a vocabulary or history to them. The people who buy my work are usually not looking for “decor” per se, but a work that has some degree of intrigue and depth – and of course one that will work in their home.
My paintings always evolve from the process. I often admire those who can plan out a painting but that has rarely been the case for me. I am influenced by dilapidated buildings, and the way time and nature’s elements alter our surroundings. Rust, peeling paint, and cracked surfaces all suggest a forgotten past to them that I try to evoke in my work and I love the never-ending variety of elements and textures that I can layer into a single piece.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
My view on NFTs is that the vast majority of people don’t understand them. I may very well be among them, as it seems to me that purchasing what is in essence a file, does not sound very enjoyable.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
People who like my work enough to want to live with it in their homes is the most gratifying part of being an artist. Each sale, no matter how large or how small, provides validation to keep pursuing my creative goals.
