We recently connected with Ellen Harz-Cizek and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellen, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
I have not necessarily donated a percentage of sales but instead donated my time taking photos for non-profit organizations pro bono. In the past, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing to events for Ele’s Place – West Michigan and Resilience: Advocates for Ending Violence.

Ellen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My mom, a Creative Director/Graphic Designer, introduced me to photography. Working closely with many photographers throughout her career, she would often bring me to the photoshoots, and sometimes I’d even be a model on the set. I fell in love with the whole production and the crew, who were always fun to work with. I earned my BFA from Kendall College of Art & Design and have been a Freelance Photographer ever since. I’ve also worked full-time as a Marketing Specialist for the past 7 years. Within this role, I handle all photo + video content for the company, including specialized projects and events. I maintain my freelance work during the evenings and weekends. The flexibility and pace between these two careers is a great balance for me.
I specialize in portraits, couples, weddings, and events. I admire the honesty that photography portrays. I’ve always been interested in capturing people — how we move and experience moments within our surroundings and with others. Therefore, I’m always anticipating those ‘in-between’ candid moments.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Focusing on the people I know best and who will be advocates for my business by helping spread the word and sending referrals my way. Also staying in touch consistently with past clients.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being able to create every day is a dream come true for most artists. But, it’s challenging to establish yourself and find clients regularly —all while not letting income stress you to the point of losing your passion for doing what you love.
