We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elle Pirmoradi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elle below.
Hi Elle, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Though I have a background in jewelry, the idea to start my own brand came to me at a particular moment 3 years ago. It was shortly after the holidays, during which I received a beautiful gift from my husband, a watch from a renowned French jewelry Maison. I loved it but I did play with the idea to get a bangle instead (stacked wrists have always held a special place in my heart). So I visited their flagship store in Beverly Hills and had a look around. While of course their jewelry was stunning, I left the store (with my gifted watch) thinking I’ve seen all of those bangles on many different people so many times – if I felt that way, surely others must too. Jewelry to me is highly personal. A few days later I put on my stack and I couldn’t stop thinking about what kind of piece I would add to it if I could. If I could. And something in me said, I could and I should! I began sketching and quickly had several ideas for fabulous additions to wrist parties. Being in L.A., with a background in high jewelry and a love for impeccable design, it all fell into place. At this point I was exclusively focusing on bangles. The name Bangelle popped in my head early on, way before I saw any of the prototypes: Bang+Elle makes Bangelle! I thought it was a brilliant idea. And the fact that it rhymes with Chanel just made it better. What were the odds that after playing with the words bangle and my name, I ended up with a great name for my jewelry line? Hit the nail on the head!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I relocated to L.A. in 2006 after completing my classical piano education in Hamburg, Germany. Shortly after I was going to begin college and ultimately graduated from UCLA with a degree in Psychology. It was at that time that I took my passion for jewelry to a professional level. Parallel to attending college, I became the right hand of a renowned jeweler in Beverly Hills. I learned about the many parts of the trade, about designing, manufacturing, customer care… Especially the design part was intriguing to me. During this time, I realized this is it, this is my calling. Even though I moved on and focused on school, started a family and did lots of other things, I kept designing pieces throughout the years. Skip to 2021, multiple transcontinental moves and 2 kids later, that’s when I founded Bangelle. My passion/dream turned into creating a high-end jewelry line, dedicated to all things around the wrist. From the beginning I knew I wanted to create stunning bangles that would be the perfect addition to stacked wrists. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the well known high-end bangles and bracelets that look so good in a well put-together stack. To complement those, I strove to create innovative and gorgeous bangles, all in 18K, all meticulously handcrafted by artisans in Los Angeles. The initial collection had 4 different bangles, that each came in yellow, rose and white gold. They are solid pieces, and at varying weights, they are perfect to layer. The more substantial pieces quite literally carry their own weight and look stunning on their own.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I design all pieces by hand with pencil and paper. The manufacturing happens in a few workshops of local artisans in Los Angeles. We have a tight network of amazing master jewelers that turn the vision into reality. I was fortunate to have contacts from my previous time in jewelry. Once I had the final sketches for the initial collection, I called some old friends, and we started the production of the first prototypes. Those were adjusted and tweaked around until perfected, which took about another year. The result was a collection of solid, luxurious, 18K unisex bangles. For me, it was definitely helpful having known the craftsmen before I started this venture. Especially in the jewelery industry, having a level of trust is invaluable. That being said, I have built new relationships since starting Bangelle as well and we’re now working closely together. I suppose it’s like in other fields, knowing someone helps but is not required.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
We sell directly via the website www.Bangelle.com. There are different reasons as to why. For one, many of the famous platforms don’t work for high-end products. Aside from the big ones, there are luxury online retailers. Those are a better fit but you have to adhere to their vision, their aesthetic and their story to some extent. You would be using their website, their guidelines for photography and presentation… Creating my brand allows me to creatively express exactly what I have in mind. That freedom is wonderful and leads to no unnecessary compromises. Presenting my jewelry online to clients old and new, is an integral part of my business. Having the liberty to also showcase and introduce it in a way that’s aligned with my vision is equally as important to me. And lastly, offering it to clients directly ensures the most competitive pricing for both clients and myself.
